The Research On THIEN NAN SHIN PAO

In the year of 1819,Raffles landed in Singapore Island.After that,the British colonists started to hire Chinese laborers and to reclaim the lands in the country.They also started to construct ports and markets and initiated a large-scale international trade.The ancient land of Singapore embarked on the journey of modern development.The booming economy and the influx of immigrants gradually turned the nation into an immigrant society.After 1840,the number of people moving to Singapore kept increasing,and it reached its peak during the large-scale immigration wave in southeastern China,which started right after 1860.This has made Singapore one of the most popular destinations for Overseas Chinese since the begining of modern history.The number of Overseas Chinese takes up a large part of the population in Singapore.The Overseas Chinese have laid the foundation for the nation's booming economy,which in turn has led to the establishment of the Overseas-Chinese communities,the Overseas-Chinese schools as well as the Overseas-Chinese newspaper and have facilitated their development.One of the examples is the Thien Nan Shin Pao,an important platform for the development of the Overseas-Chinese culture in Singapore.In this paper,the first chapter focuses on the historical background to Singapore's newspaper Thien Nan Shin Pao by exploring the trajectories of international immigrant society,overseas Chinese economy and overseas Chinese culture in modern Singapore.On this basis,the second chapter deals with the newspaper's foundation,publication,editing,writer team,audience,purpose,characteristics and nature.In the third chapter,Thien Nan Shin Pao's relations to Singapore's overseas Chinese economy and culture are discussed in terms of its effort to strengthen the ties between Singapore's overseas Chinese economy and culture and China,its appeal to carry forward the fine traditions of Chinese culture,and its promotion of the development of the overseas Chinese newspaper culture in Singapore.The fourth chapter studies Thien Nan Shin Pao ' s echo of and role in the reform and revolutionary ideas in the late Qing Dynasty,from aspects of the life,theory,influence,value and contribution of its major editorial writers.The fifth chapter gives an in-depth analysis and demonstration of Thien Nan Shin Pao's influence from an international perspective,and from its connection with other newspapers and periodicals,interaction with social ethos and leadership of social movement.The above research aims to clarify the flesh-and-blood ties between the overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia and their motherland and native country China,present the contributions that overseas Chinese communities have made to support China's political and economic development,demonstrate Thien Nan Shin Pao's role in promoting the development of overseas Chinese economy and culture in Singapore,and explain Thien Nan Shin Pao's media character and professional spirit.Meanwhile,this paper analyzes the ideas and theories of major editorial writers of Thien Nam Shin Pao,and investigates their spiritual value in the interaction with social ethos and their contributions to social progress.This paper mainly utilizes the historical data of Thien Nan Shin Pao collected in National University of Singapore Library and supplementarily utilizes Sing Po,Jit Shin Pau,Lat Pau and other contemporary Singapore newspapers.By sorting out and learning from previous researches,this paper adopts the sociology and history methods to construct the multi-dimensional space for research on history of journalism.It improves the paradigm and expands the field in order to study important values of the news media in inspiring thinking,shining the spirit,promoting social progress,promoting economic development,etc.Some academically doubtful points in modern history of China were also clarified.It is concluded that Thien Nan Shin Pao was not the official newspaper of the Protect the Emperor Society,Khoo Seok Wan was not a member of the Protect the Emperor Society and did not have a close relationship with Kang Youwei,and Khoo Seok Wan did not fund Tang Caichang and his uprising in Hankou,etc.These findings are conducive to promoting an in-depth research on the history of overseas Chinese in Singapore and the newspaper history of overseas Chinese.
