This paper combined E.Hobsbawm with T.Ranger's The Invent ion of Tradition and Geertz.C's The Interpretation of Culture,for a nalysis in Korea rural outskirts of Suwon Gosaek Dong ancient folk"Tug of War" inheritance.This paper is divided into six chapters.The first chapter abstract the main research object,subject,pur pose and method.Gosaek Dong is located in Suwon city on the ou tskirts of the urban fringe.In 2000,when I came to the village to conduct field work,the southern part of the village still retains larg e tracts of farmland,but now it has been developed as an industria 1 park.At present,the village is still inherited many traditional cult ural elements,the villagers spontaneously organize various activities every year,such as the traditional Lantern Festival "Tug of War"ceremony.Hobsbawm and Langer's The Invention of Traditional Theory p rovides a theoretical basis to explain the recovery of the traditional"Tug of War" ceremony;Geertz.C's The Interpretation of Culture Theory provides the theoretical basis for it.In the second chapter,the author introduces two cultural places where the Tug of War Ceremony exists.One is Suwon,another is Gosaek Dong.Suwon City is the capital of Gyeonggi-Do,located in the south of Seoul City,40 kilometers far from there.Recently,the Suwon city is planning to construct itself into a famous historical and cultural city,based on the "Filial" culture and "Hwaseong Fortress".Gosaek Dong,located at the southernmost of Suwon City.Co nsidering climatic conditions,it is obviously a natural land of plent y.But it is under-developed because of the Yellow Sea's current su bmerging.Although this kind of circumstance is somewhat better,it is still developed slowly because of the order of high limit from t he Suwon Military airport located in the east of the village.Nevertheless,by the South Korean rural development and urba nization environment,the size of the village has been expanding.In early 2000,in the east,north,and west of the village,they had b uilt several high-rise apartments,resulted in a large influx of foreig n populations.By 2010 the population of the village has grown to more than 20 thousand.The village has become a village in the cit y.With the development and expansion of the village,the villager s prompted the of space identity,things change with time.Sometim es people only in the village of the original Gosaek Dong,sometim es extended to the surrounding villages,and even more.This kind of uncertain space consciousness brings a sense of crisis to the nati ve people.This is the social background of the village's restoration and inheritance of the traditional "Tug of War" ceremony.Facing the problem of the development and urbanization,the v illagers have taken a variety of initiatives to maintain their original position to strengthen the cohesion of the villagers.In the third ch apter to the fifth chapter,the author describes the detailed behaviors of the villagers to shape the traditional "Tug of War" ceremony.The third chapter introduces the organization in the village.Th ese organizations are the main elements of the heritage tradition in the village heritage of the "Tug of War" ceremony.They have the villagers spontaneous cooperation organizations,local government gr assroots organizations,associations,religious groups,etc..The above organizations and groups are closely linked with each other.Among them,The peasant associations are the foundation and t he most authoritative of all organizations,The women's associations are the most solid logistical support,YMCA is the firm executive in the first line,alumni and the football association to provide a go od soil and maintained the platform for youth.The traditional band and the wizard provide a professional foundation for the continuati on of traditional culture.These factors coexist with the many intangible cultural heritage of t he village and have played an important role and guarantee for the village's ability to independently organize and inherit the traditional"Tug of War" ceremony.There are a variety of organizations and groups to provide the basis for mass and public opinion.However,a healthy,active and conscious village organization is a significant feature of the village.In the fourth chapter,the author introduces the blend situation of the modern and traditional of the villagers' daily life.Mainly fro m apparel,food,accommodation,travel and other aspects of the dis cussion.With the process of modernization,westernization has beco me fashionable,has been deeply into people's daily lives,wearing t he suits,eat Western food,live in apartments,celebrate the foreign festival has been very common,not feel special and strange.Instea d,hanbok(Korean traditional clothes)became special clothes for spe cial events and special industries wear outfit.From the surface,the westernization has been a trend.' However,seen from the funeral,most people still stubbornly traditional burial,this shows that in the daily life of traditional culture still have a very important role.In daily life,the attitude towards traditional culture is directly reflected in the activities of many years in the village.The author believes that the activities of the village are the daily life of the "s tage",is a microcosm of daily life.Now the activities held in the village there are Elderly Day in May,the Memorial Day in August,the Sports Meet in the year of October,as well as the first month of the sacrifice,Jisinbalgi(Honor the Earth)and Tug of War cerem ony.These clearly highlight the theme of traditional culture.These are the village organization conscious and purposeful arrangements,from the beginning of Elderly Day,each activity interval for about three months,and finally to the first month of the festival hall,Ear th God and Tug of War ceremony,to pave the way for the former three are for the Lantern Festival organized by the "Tug of War"ceremony.The fifth chapter is divided into four levels,national and localgovernment,as the representative of the intellectuals,scholars and villagers and wizards who has professional skills,discusses the mai n role of inheriting these effects in traditional "Tug of War" cerem ony.Their interpretation and practice of traditional culture are differ ent because of variance of the status of these subjects and the purp ose of the pursuit of traditional culture.However,after the unremi tting efforts of the villagers,so that these subjects point to the sam e goal,that is,the village's traditional "Tug of War"ceremony.State and local governments to develop and provide the relevant policy;scholars and intellectuals to guide and create a social atmosphere;as The Wizard(or the inheritance of intangible cultural heritage of people)to provide professional skills and training successors.The villagers,then become a specific heritage of the crowd,th ere is no awareness and without efforts of the villagers,the traditio nal "Tug of War" ceremony will always be buried in the long river of history.Also,the ancient village has Shrine Hall,Sacrifice,Jisi nbalgi(Honor the Earth)and Tug of War ceremony and traditional i nstruments such as the villagers team consciously choose traditional symbols,restoration of traditional Tug of War ceremony and traditi on has provided the basis,which is an effective means to build a new the core of city development and cope with the crisis of self-1 ose.The sixth chapter is the conclusion.In this repeatedly stated th e importance of grassroots heritage conscious behavior.In Gosaek Dong above the bearing subjects,understanding and awareness of th e intangible cultural heritage are clearly not the same,the results of practice are not the same,in the process of inheritance,inheritance of subjects according to their own needs and values to interpret a nd explain and pursuit.Gosaek Dong villagers are faced with development and urbaniz ation,take the initiative to choose traditional culture,from the deve lopment of multi-level and multi-angle and mobilization of tradition al elements,the use of traditional culture of the social function,str engthen the cohesion between villagers,establish the core position o f their own.This is the initiative of the villagers,but also as an in tangible cultural heritage of the main subject of conscious behavior.It can not be denied that the recognition of the traditional culture by the various strata of the Korean society has created the conditio ns for the choice of the village,and the villagers have played a ke y role in the cognition of the traditional culture and the intangible cultural heritage.After the restoration of the Gosaek Dong villagers "Tug of Wa r" ceremony,and there is no stagnation,they will continue to dig,shaping and inheriting traditional culture elements and symbols thro ugh various ways and means.Their behavior is not to pass on the heritage,it is for their own future life.
