Zong-Kao Zia(1895-1974),referred to as Z.K.Zia(???),is one of the representatives of Christian indigenization in modern China.He made great achievements in translation,writing and education etc.Based on historical data and a field survey,this dissertation analyzes his cultural ideals and life practices,presents a comprehensive analysis of his thoughts and achievements,and reflects the process of China's modernization.This dissertation consists of eight chapters.Chapters one to four focus on Z.K.Zia's family background,life experiences and social acquaintances.The first chapter "Background and the Origins of Thought" is set in Ningbo after the introduction of Christianity and explains the influence Christianity had upon Z.K.Zia's family.Christian culture played a very important role in his life and constituted the origin of his thought,together with Chinese traditional culture.The second chapter "Formation of Cultural Personality" pieces together his study experiences at home and abroad by combing his Chinese and English works,combined with domestic and foreign university historical data.His personality was shaped by a blend of Chinese and western education and his overseas experience deeply influenced his outlook on life and the world.During this time,he developed a new attitude towards western civilization.The third chapter "Life Practices" tries to restore the work of Z.K.Zia and his later years.Deeply influenced by Christian "social gospel" thinking,he adopted a "practice what you preach" approach to striving for the Christianization of China.The fourth chapter "Expansion of Life" focuses on Z.K.Zia's contacts with his Chinese and foreign friends,such as Hu Shi,Feng Zikai and Toyohiko Kagawa etc.His friends were mainly Christian but not limited to Christian people.With these friends,he enriched his own life,and made a big impact on society.Chapters five to eight are the main part of this dissertation,analyzing Z.K.Zia's cultural ideals and his achievements in the fields of translation,publication,literary creation as well as youth education,and his contribution to the construction of modern civil society.The fifth chapter "Three Dimensions of Cultural Ideals" analyses his ideals of integrating traditional Chinese culture with Christianity,supplemented by science,to create a new Chinese culture.This chapter also describes his views on "using morality to save China"(renge jiu guo ????)and religious education.The sixth chapter "Writing and Translation Practices and Their Ideological Implications"discusses Z.K.Zia's contributions in the fields of magazine editing,translation and literature.The seventh chapter "Education Practices and Their Ideological Implications" discusses Z.K.Zia's contribution to the compilation of Chinese teaching and reading materials and work in the field of English education for teenagers.The eighth chapter "A Paradigm of Social Enlightenment Practices" traces back to the influence of the May 4th Movement on Christianity in China and his work during this period.This chapter also highlights his views on citizenship,women and family in modern China.This study focuses on the life and thoughts of Z.K.Zia,and uses the concept of "the internal other" to sum up the lessons learned from history.It serves as the basis for further study of modern Christian intellectuals represented by Z.K.Zia.
