The dissertation chooses 14 oil works from 19th century French and Russian narrative Paintings, groups them under 6 motifs, namely“encountering”,“Ritual and Crowd”,“Killing and Hero”,“Killer and Killed”,“Crossing the Alps”and“Execution”.The dissertation makes comparison between these masterpieces of Art History from painter's point of view, trying to work out the context within which those old masters composed their works. What kind of situation were they up to?What choices did they have? How did they work with patterns and motifs? The dissertation has made efforts reconstructing the possible working and thinking process of narrative painters of the time, expecting a deeper understanding of Artist in working. And hope to give some inspiration to painters of this day.
