Analysis On The Color Concept Of Chinese Folk Crafts

The research perspective focuses on the grass root of Chinese traditional craft creations in this paper—the folk craft creation color,which is taken as an overall research object to analyze various color phenomena,summarize its characteristics and properties,sum up the deep connotation and cultural concept of color selection and application representations and analyze the thinking mode and cultural psychology of the masses.This research carries out analyses on not only color phenomena and characteristics and “what are included” in the craft creation color,but also color selection,application and preference in view of the concept,thinking and sentiment of a color subject,to strive for answering the problem of “why” about color application of folk creations,explore its source and venation and represent the cultural concept of folk creation art color during selection and application.About the selection of a research object,we should focus on the type of the creation with stronger aesthetic properties and especially those of craft creations closely related with the daily life of the masses;we not only analyze the historical derivation venation of ancient and modern colors based on ancient literalness,ancient books and records and unearthed cultural relics but also emphasize the color problem of existing folk creations.As for the research method,we hereby compare the folk creation color application with the palaces,scholars religion types,emphasize the organization of craft books and records based on the overall and multi-dimensional academic eyesight,integrate macroscopic discussions with typical cases to strive for highlight-based summarization and considerate analysis.There are seven chapters in this paper,first of all,the colors and appearances of folk creations are represented from color sources and characteristics;then unique concept of folk creation colors is analyzed carefully from application and aesthetics,thinking and sentiment,technology and craft work,rituals and five elements,etc;finally,the colors and concepts of folk creations are commented to summarize the whole paper.The origin of a creation color is analyzed from life consciousness and instinct in Chapter I,where it is believed that the faith,observation and perception of the ancient people on the world are closely related to the formation and confirmation of the creationcolor concept.Afterward,the color is introduced in various fields of the ancient people,such as food,clothing,housing and transportation in the role of dominance and plays an active role.In the context of Chinese culture,the ritual color concept has been confirmed early in the traditional creations and presented influences from ancient times to the present.Typical characteristics of the folk creation color are analyzed systematacially in Chapter II,where the folk creation color has a vivid modality,representing a collective consciousness;a common binary modality exists,presenting co-existence of simplicity and gorgeousness and comparison between hue and complementary color;in addition,the folk craft creation color is not a objective color but featured by selective and applicable subjectivity,completely representing a subjective image.The sybolisation,based on an associative thinking,is an important security mechanism for the creation color in exerting all efficiencies.The frequently single or pure color of a folk creation always shows the characteristics of decorative aesthetics.The diversity of the natural and geographical environment and the pluralism of national and regional cultures create typical regional characteristics of the creation color.The summary and collation of these obvious characteristics will benefit our overall control over diverse creation colors and open up a new path for deep analyses.The backbone of this paper is arranged from Chapter III to Chapter VI.Rooted in the vision of life in Chapter III,practicality and life are considered as the basis point of color selection and application of folk creations,while the pursuit of decorative beauty is an important force in pushing the color development and realizing the color value.In the process of the color selection and application practice,the integration of imitation,representation and overtaking of natural beauty with its shape causes that the creation color serves the people's life and shows a color concept of the unification of beauty and application.The preference of folk creations for the color selection and application is analyzed in Chapter IV from such aspects as personal color instinct,national psychology,thinking habit and so on,taking colors(red,yellow,blue,black,white,etc)for examples,to specifically analyze the internal mental mechanism of the people's unique color preference and discuss the people's particular cognition modes and thinking characteristics incurred by this preference.Beginning with the visual angle of technology in Chapter V,the inner regulations of techniques and materials for the creation colors are analyzed,taking purple for an example,to carry out deep researches and systematical collations ofthe preparation and application of ancient dyes and pigments.Taking weaving and dyeing,building materials for example,the huge influences of technological progress and innovation on the creation colors are presented and the nature representation and quality beauty are emphasized and analyzed in numerous folk creation types.All of the above form the simple color appearances of folk creations.In Chapter IV,the author hereby analyses the characteristics of traditional color ritualization and the color evolution under the five-element logic.On the one hand,the ritualization restricts the selection and application of folk colors;on the other hand,the people's color selection and application are constantly breaking through such restriction,whereupon,the dependence on the ritual color concept runs through the development process of folk creation colors.Simultaneously,the integration of custom acculturation with interethnic color culture also affects the color application habit of the masses.As a result,the people's color concept is different from that of authorities and scholars,this earthly color view of the folk creation art,together with “five-color outlook”,etc,forms a unique eastern color culture system,in which national spirits in several thousands of years are coagulated accordingly.The color concept of folk creations is analyzed and evaluated from rational and sentiment aspects in Chapter VII,where rational factors are contained in the folk creation color but its ground mass is humanistic,so any pure scientific logical method fails to distinguish its true fact and definite its reasons.The color “reasons” are subject to the people's sentiment and restricted by thick humanistic implications in Chinese culture.The cultural significance of the color gets ahead of its pure visual representation,which decides the evaluation on various creation colors.The basic principle rests on suitability,and it is the best if the color is conformity to the function,value,modality and cultural meaning and ethical norms of creations.The selection and application of a color depend on suitability,which is the aesthetic principle of Chinese color.At the same time,we believe that the cultural function and its long influencing force as well as the folk creation color and its concept form organic components of the traditional culture,and currently they still affect the color selection and application and preference of Chinese people.The folk creation color,as the grass root of Chinese color culture,can still represent and reveal its new vital force in the new era.The research shows that the color is just like a mirror shinning upon Chinese creation culture,and it is an important representation of national spirits,with unique expressions,toreveal the colorful styles and features of its vision,psychology and culture.It is believed in this paper that both five-element logic and ritual framework present profound influences on the folk craft creation color but fail to completely summarize the folk color application.The folk craft creation color represents an earthly color concept based on life demands,aiming at satisfying material and mental demands,pursuing a decorative beauty,depicting obvious artistry marks and integrating influences of five elements and rituals.There is a preference for single or pure color in the folk craft creation color,it is characterized by subjectivity,living and human culture,it has a pursuit of sybolisation meaning and simple beauty,additionally,it is also restricted by five-element logic and rituals.The implied meaning and connotation of the folk creation color and its cultural concept approach to utility demands of the earthly masses,full of a thick life flavor.The creation color reflects a natural beauty and reveals a craft mark so as to represent the earthly utility pursuit of the masses,and it is a materialized expression of the people's thought,sentiment and consciousness.
