As a language phenomenon,multi-category words exist in many languages in the world;it has a certain universality. When demonstrating grammatical features of different parts of the speech,multi-category words must be closely and obviously linked in semantics, and the grammatical features of different parts of speech must be fixed and regular. In one context,a grammatical feature can be found, while in another context, another grammatical feature can be found. To put it simply, grammatical features of two different types of words cannot both be found in the same context.I have studied in China for many years, and so understood the existence of a large number of multi-category words in Chinese, which are also considered an academic problem for many Chinese scholars. As a Thai post graduate student,I found that Thai language includes certain multi-category words as well. Thus, the idea of conducting a comparative study of the phenomenon of multi-category words in both Chinese and Thai languages is produced. This has become the original intention of this thesis. We believe that the study of the Chinese and Thai multi-category words not only has an important theoretical value, but also has an opportunity of understanding the grammatical phenomena of the two languages. At the same time, this is helpful in teaching both the Chinese and Thai languages, and is particularly helpful for Thai students who are learning Chinese. The author narrowed down the scope of the study, and so multi-category words of both Chinese and Thai poems are the objects of this study. Both the ‘Modern Chinese Dictionary,' the sixth edition, and the Thai ‘Royal Institute Dictionary,' the 2011 edition, are the corpus sources of the research process and statistics. Also, all the Chinese – Thai multi-category words listed are collated. In order to provide the meaning of the word, arrangements of the multi-category words are analyzed. The content of the thesis is divided into seven chapters,as follows:The introduction, mainly elaborating the reason of the topic selected, the significance of the research object and scope, research objectives and methods, detailed introduction of the research status, and pointing out the shortcomings of the current research problem. The first chapter includes an overview of the Chinese – Thai ‘multicategory words',including the definition and classification of the Chinese – Thai multi-category words, and the Chinese – Thai's ‘class' and ‘flexible use'.This chapter is concerned with the definition of the multicategory words, discussing the works of both Chinese and Thai researchers regarding the definition of the multi-category words and the analysis of the multi-Category words and its usage. This is in order to clarify the class definition, because both sides can easily mix the concept. The second chapter,Introduction to theories for analyzing and comparing words of different parts of speech in Thai and Chinese. The third to the seventh chapter is a comparative study on Chinese – Thai multi-category words, demonstrating its collating data and statistics. The comparative study is on the two Chinese – Thai noun–verb ‘multi-category words' dictionary, verb–noun multi-category words, noun–adjective multicategory words, verb–adjective multi-category words, and adjective-verb multi-category words.Includes a comparative study mainly on the Chinese – Thai multi-category words in cognitive perspectives, exploring what kind of association multi-category words has in semantics, and discussing what mechanism contributed to the semantic connection of the multi-category words. From the perspective of cognitive semantics, metonymy is the internal mechanism of the formation of multi-category words. When many studies referred to metonymy, they also referred to metaphor, because they think that both sides are formed with two or more parts of the speech, and some words with semantic factors are related to each other. The conclusion,in which includes the summaries of the previous results. The focus of this thesis is on the collection and statistical analysis of Chinese and Thai words,as well as the interpretation of internal mechanism generated by multi-category words. The difficulty lies in both the collection of and the comparison framework of Chinese and Thai multi-category words.Despite many difficulties, the author tried her best to explore the features of both the Chinese and Thai multi-category words, providing classified statistics, comparison and analysis. The statistical and quantitative analysis of the Chinese and Thai multi-category words is the innovation in this study. We hope that this study will be helpful to other Chinese – foreign multi-category words comparative studies, and will be helpful for teaching non-native speakers Chinese language as a foreign language.
