The Study On The Evolution Of The Suzerain-Vassal Relationship Between China And Korea Within The Vision Of The Construction Of The Modern Chinese Nation-State

Since the 1860 s,nationalism was gradually generated in China.With the introduction of Western artifacts,the modern Chinese national consciousness and state consciousness was gradually increased.A prologue to the Nation-state construction was gradually developed.The issue of the Vassal State was an insurmountable agenda for the construction of the modern Chinese Nation-state.The evolution of the Suzerain-Vassal relationship in the Modern China and Korea was launched while China was transiting from the traditional multinational empire to the modern Nation-state.In order to adapt to the new situation,the late Qing government began to seek strategies to solve the problem of the Vassal Korea.From the perspective of the Nation-state construction,through the transformation of policies on the Vassal State in the late Qing government and the visions and countermeasures on the status of the Vassal Korea of the late Qing Dynasty scholar,this dissertation will explore the Suzerain-Vassal relationship between China and Korea was how to evolve,from 1860 when the second Opium War ended to 1895 when the Treaty of Shimonoseki was signed.Meanwhile,in order to more fully observe the above-mentioned process of evolution,this dissertation discussed how the Vassal Korea dealt with the transformation of the Qing empire and also explored how Europe,the United States and Japan evaluated the Suzerain-Vassal relationship between China and Korea,and they are how to play a game on the Korean issue,which was based on their own interests.The dissertation consists of 6 parts,namely the preface,4 chapters of the main text and the conclusion.The preface illustrated which was from the selected topic reasons,the research ideas and the related research summaries.The research methods and contents of this dissertation were explained.Chapter 1 discussed,after the gradual formation of the nationalism in the modernChina,the Qing government initially attempted to facilitate the modern Chinese Nation-state construction through the establishment of modern diplomatic institutions,sending diplomatic envoys and other specific actions.The status of the Vassal Korea was reconsiderated,and the policies on the Vassal State was also changed.Chapter 2 mainly illustrated how the courtiers and scholar bureaucrats of late Qing Dynasty reimagined and changed the status of Vassal Korea,and how to be implemented by formulating policies and signing of the treaty under the background of the modern Chinese Nation-state construction.Chapter 3 mainly dealt with the countermeasures which was adopted by Korea,when Korea confronted all kinds of policies for the Vassal State.Chapter 4 setted forth the position and the evolution's problem of Europe,the United States and Japan for the Suzerain-Vassal relationship between Modern China and Korea by typical cases.The conclusion mainly summarized the characteristics of the Suzerain-Vassal relationship between Modern China and Korea.
