Focusing on students to promote their development as the standard is the basic essence of the process evaluation model of talent cultivation quality in colleges.Among the research on the development of college students so far,scholars at home and abroad have done a lot of research into the factors influencing college students:verifying the impacts of interpersonal interaction,student engagement and learning patterns on the development of college students.However,most of the research focuses on macro factors,little on micro factors.There is even rare research examining the impacts of reading,the micro perspective,on the development of college students.Reading is human's basic practice of acquiring knowledge,inheriting civilization and enhancing spirit.It is also the most basic and most important way of learning and living.Analysis of the correlation between reading and the development of college students not only helps renew our understanding of the importance of reading in the process of talent cultivation,but also helps lay theoretical basis and provide statistic support for the reform of college talent cultivation,the improvement of the quality of talent cultivation and the construction of Chinese college student development theory.This paper,based on the existing research at home and abroad,adopting both quantitative and qualitative research methods,explores the relationship between reading and the development of college students.Through the field visit to five universities in Zhejiang province,a questionnaire survey was carried out targeting 1105 liberal arts undergraduates.The collected data were then processed and analyzed by SPSS,Excel,multiple linear regression,multiple logistic regression models and ordered logistic regression models to obtain information concerning college students'reading contents,reading amount and reading style,which helps verify the degree to which reading influences college students' development as well as the role colleges play in enhancing students' reading engagement and promoting student development.Besides,through in-depth interviews with 22 liberal arts College students(including 18 students and 4 working people),the researcher feels their reading experiences and reading stories face-to-face.By using grounded theory to explore the impacts of reading on college student development as well as factors influencing college students' reading,findings through such qualitative research verify,supplement,and enrich quantitative research conclusions.This research finds that individual characteristics of college students,namely knowledge acquisition ability,innovation ability,psychological quality,organizational skills,expressive ability,values and cognitive thinking are remarkably related to the efforts they have made in reading including their reading amount and reading contents.Reading environment and reading interaction are the support and services that colleges offer to attract and encourage students to actively engage in reading.Reading environment and reading interaction significantly affect the reading of college students and their development,indicating that the college has an impact on the level of students' reading engagement and the development of students.In a word,the development of college students,is the result of the collective efforts of students'engagement in reading and colleges' support of reading.This study finds the greater the amount of student reading,the more professional books and classic works students read,the more efforts the college makes concerning the establishment of reading courses,the organization of school reading activities,the construction of school library and the interaction of campus reading,to encourage and promote reading,the better college students develop.However,the research finds,the reality at present is,neither college students' reading engagement nor colleges'reading support is satisfactory.Based on the research findings above,this paper,puts forward three suggestions for college students and college,namely enhancing students' reading engagement,establishing reading courses as the main channel with campus reading activities as the supplement,and reinforcing and perfecting reading interaction system featuring reading recommendation,reading guiding,and reading sharing.
