Study On In-depth Corporate Community Involvement In The Context Of China:Behavioral Features,Governance Structure And Interaction Patterns

In-depth corporate community involvement(CCI)is a new research topic under the background of harmonious community construction in China.Unlike the community in western(such as USA)which have been generally developed and are independent of the government management,the community in China is still in the its early stages which shows two main characters:firstly,the development of community must go through from residential areas which are suffering from complicated social problems to harmonious community;secondly,the government is still the only dominator in social management field which acts as a frame for community construction.However,most research on CCI are based on the western background,so analyzing the CCI in the context of China has important theoretical and practical values.In practice,many enterprises have been playing a key role in the transformations of numerous "residential area" to "harmonious community" by adopting in-depth CCI successfully.And these enterprises have also realized their own development through community construction achievements.Therefore,in order to construct the framework of in-depth CCI in China,this paper tries to explore such three questions:1)what are the behavioral features of in-depth CCI in China?(phenomenon description)2)how can enterprises obtain the legitimacy to conduct in-depth CCI in China?(governance structure)3)how does the enterprise interact with other participants in the process of in-depth CCI?(interaction patterns).First of all,this paper explores the behavioral features of in-depth CCI through analyzing the secondary data(related literature and documents)of the community construction and corporate community involvement.It finds that there are three behavioral features:1)multistage feature,it depends on the fact that transformation of "residential area" to "harmonious community" experiences a long-term accumulation process;2)hierarchical ferature,it is attributed to the multiple properties(political,social,economical)of community in China,and the challenges from social governance reforms come first to community service improvement;3)multilateral interactive feature,it rests with various participants with vague awareness of their own function and the intricate interest relationship.Such features implies two main challenges for firm to conduct indepth CCI,namly,obtaining the legitimacy as a governing subject to conduct indepth CCI and mobilize multilateral participants to interact to deal with different social problems.Secondly,this paper tries to establishe the legitimizing mechanism of indepth CCI in China.Based on the framework of social political governance theory,we use the longitudinal case study method to examines four elements(subject,the structure of the organization,resources and the distribution of rights and responsibilities)and their establishment and development.It finds that:1)The establishment of the governance structure led by "party building" is the result of indepth CCI;2)there are four CCI strategies for firms to help establish the elements of community governance structure,namely,positioning as community enterprise,obtaining government authorization,organizing the community and ensuring resource supply;3)The establishement and improvement of the community governance structure can legitimize firms who try to have themselves and mobilize other participants to involve in community construction,which would make sure CCI can go further.Thirdly,this paper summarizes the multi-party(corporate-government-community)interactive patterns in the different development stages of indepth CCI by deriving from social political governance theory and conducting embedded multiply case study to examines the three dimensions(objective,content,approach)in multi-party interaction.Three typical cases are chosed to represent the different stages of corporate community involvement.The study finds that:1)there are three interactive patterns which are progressive with the process of indepth CCI:enterprise dominant interaction,corporate-stakeholders cooperative interaction,and platform-based interaction;2)these progressive interactive patterns help each other forward with the deepening of community involvement,and form a systemic solution for community construction.In sum,based on the research of indepth CCI in China,through the introduction of social political governance theory into the research of indepth CCI,this paper constructs the two-level framework of indepth CCI,which is composed of government structure and multi-party progressive interactive pattern.The conclusions of this paper extend the research on corporate community involvement,and also provide a useful guidance for firms to involve in the development of harmonious community in China.
