How to create value through innovation for enterprises in an important research topic in management studies.From the current situation of Chinese enterprises,Chinese enterprises long-term follow "introduction-absorption-innovation" model,and then trapped into another innovation cycle with "imitating – dropping behind – imitating again-and then dropping behind" innovation cycle.Practice shows that only focusing on exploratory innovation or exploitative innovation can not bring "Built to Last" for the Chinese enterprise,they need to change their innovative mindset from unitary thinking to ambidextrous thinking.Based on resource-based view,organization theory and ambidextrous view,this paper focus on the question of the optimal coordination between exploratory innovation and exploitative innovation,which is namely how to achieve ambidextrous innovation,and further studies the interact influences of slack resource and organizational structure on ambidextrous innonvation.Thus,this paper focus on the balanced and combined dimensions of ambidextrous innovation,distinguishes absorbed/unabosrbed slack resource and decentralization/formalization organizational structure,and most-importantly proposes a research model on the influences of slack resource and organizational structure on ambidextrous innovation.This study designed measurement and questionnaire referring to the existing literature,and carried out nationwide surveys and used final 490 samples from survey data to empirical verify the model and hypotheses proposed in this paper.Compared with previous studies,the main innovations are:First,the paper explores the concept of balanced and combined ambidextrous innovation,and demonstrates their research importance.Through observing China innovation practice,this paper finds the reason why there are lots of unified conclusion and theoretical-communication missing in the existing ambidextrous innovation studies is current researches do not open the “black box” of ambidexterity.That is,they ignore the interacting relationship(balacing and combining)between two basic innovation type in ambidextrous innovation(exploratory innovation and exploitative innovation).Based on the former studies,this paper explores the principles and roles of balanced and combined ambidextrous innovation,and riches the studies on ambidexterity and resource management theory.Second,the paper explores different infueces of two slack resource types on ambidextrous innovation.Aiming the friable debate on how organizational resource affect innovation,this paper analyizes the relationship between unabsorbed/absorbed resources and balaced/combined ambidextrous innovation.The results show that slack resource directly influence the effect of abimdextrous innovation,but there are significantly different influences for balanced or combinded ambidextrous innovation.Specifically,the influences of slack resource on balanced ambidextrous innovation show to be inverse U-shaped,that is over high or low slack resource is not conductive to maintaining the relative strutrue of exploratory and exploitive innovation,the moderate level slack resource benefits most.On the other hand,slack resource positively influence the combined ambidextrous innovation,there is no turing point.These results highlight that the influnences do not change due to the types of slack resource.Unabsorbed slack resource and absorbed slack resource play the same influence on both balanced and combined ambidextrous innovation.So it is visible that manages to be more wary of the adverse effects caused by excessive redundant resources especially in the construction of balanced ambidextrous innovation.Third,this paper highlights the moderating effect of organizational structure on the relationship between slack resource and ambidextrous innovation.Liturature review shows that current researches ignore the interacting effect of different influencing factors on ambidextrous innovation,especially the interactions between slack resource and organizational structure.Following the classical paper of March(1991),this paper especially fill this gap and reveal how slack resource affect ambidextrous innovation moderating by different organizational structure.The results show that:(1)for unabsorbed slack resource,formalization organizational structure promote the relationship between unabsorbed slack resource and balanced ambidextrous innovation,but decentralization organizational structure exert the opposite moderating effect;however,the moderating effects of both formalization and decentralization organizational structure on the relationship between unabsorbed slack resource and combined ambidetrous innovation are not significant,which inspire us to further discuss the influences of secondary moderators such as organizational culture.(2)for absorbed slack resource,formalzation organizational structure appears a negatively moderating effect on the relathionship between absorbed slack resource and balanced ambidextrous innonvation,while positively moderate its relationship between slack resource and combined ambidextrous innovation.Decentralization organizational structure also benefits combined ambidextrous innovation.These results enrich the organization theory,and response the debate of whether slack resource is good for innovation from ambidexterity veiw,and fill the gap which lacking foundational discuss on the effect of the internal contingency factors on the relationship between slack resource and ambidextrous innovation.
