In the modern society, the industrial agglomeration can be seen everywhere and recently is taken as a new economic growth mode. Therefore, the mechanism of industrial agglomeration has become a hot topic in the economic geography. The research on the industrial agglomeration originated from Marshall's externality in 1890,he pointed that the three factors, the labour pool, the industrial specialization and the knowledge spillover are the reasons for the industrial agglomeration.Recently, some scholars have studied on the existing of industrial agglomeration and explained why the firms are concentrated on the places from different aspects, such as knowledge spillover, increasing return, the competitive advantage and so on.In 1990 s,the New Economic Geography explained the reasons and evolution of the industrial agglomeration from a new method and special aspect. The transportation infrastructure which is an important resource endowments, not only relates to the factor productivity, but also to the spatial distance and transportation cost between regions. Therefore,it has impacts on the spatial layout of the industry. From the systematic perspective, the transportation network constituted by the nodes and roads is a complex system. On the one hand, the network structures generated by the different connection between nodes play different roles in the regional economic development. On the other hand, the interplay between elements of the transportation system and economic system would impact the development and distribution of the economic activities.Based on the literature review, this paper combines of theoretic and empirical methods, adopts the analytic strategy of layer upon layer, and tries to explore the mechanism of transportation infrastructure's impact on the industrial agglomeration. The theoretic part analyzes the influence of the transportation infrastructure on the industrial spatial structure through modeling its impact on the economic behaviors, while the empirical sections use some econometric models and provide a more accurate and persuasive explanation for it.In details, the main contents include:1)Based on the New Growth theory and the New Economic Geography, the paper firstly analyzes the impacts of the investment and improvement of transportation infrastructure on the economic welfare, the spatial layout of industry and the conditions of stability, with the basic model and the extended model.2)Taking Guangdong province as an example, firstly uses the spatial Gini-index to measure the level of two-digit industrial agglomeration from 1989 to 2015 and analyzes the characteristics of its space-time evolution, then holistically testifies the Granger relationship between the transportation infrastructure and the industrial agglomeration, with the VAR model. The results support the opinions made in the theoretic section.3)Based on the conclusion made in the Fourth chapter, this part goes deep into the interior of the transportation system, and tries to uncover the mechanism of the effects of the transportation network structure on the industrial agglomeration.Based on the remarkable contribution and the data availability, this paper takes highway as a example.Firstly, the characteristics of highway network structure are measured by the methods of graph theory and complex network, and the relationships between the network structure and the industrial agglomeration are calculated by the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient.Afterwards, the static and dynamic panel models respectively are used to explore the mechanism how the highway affects the industrial agglomeration,as well as the differences among the industries also been studied. The results show that the market access and the centrality are the two factors of the highway's impact on the local industrial agglomeration, but the former is dominant. This paper considers the capital and network of transportation infrastructure and provides a new aspect to research the mechanism how it impacts on the industrial agglomeration. The empirical results are useful for the transport planning and designer and policy makers who seek to promote the industrial agglomeration for regional integration.
