The Cultural Research Of The Industrial Architecture Heritage In The Yangzte River Delta Region

In the seventeenth and eighteenth century,the Industrial Revolution rose some western countries,led by Britain,to become world power and stepped into the modern society,which marked the beginning of a new era of human beings.With the development of technology and reform of motive power,changes in production and culture created a new type of industry.In addition,the resulting industrial architecture became one of the most outstanding architectural types at that time.In the 1840s,after opening to foreign trade,trading ports like Shanghai had been legal places for foreign-funded factories.Thus,the Yangtze River Delta with Shanghai as the center region had been one of the first area to receive western culture and China's modern industrialization,influenced by the so called "progressive industrial civilization" started since then.Since it brought together many new materials,technologies and systems,the development of industrial architecture in China during that period had a close relationship with the most progressive scientific technology and social productivity all over the world,and because of which,made industrial architecture the first building type to accept western style.It was just in these industrial buildings with the noise of machines,the running system,lasted thousands of years in traditional agricultural society of China,encountered with a powerful impact as the life style of Chinese people had been totally changed.Not only this,but politics,economics,culture and many other fields had been pushed to face the situation of reforming.Therefore,all kinds of problems and phenomena resulted from the sharp conflict between Chinese old tradition and modernization,together with the collision between Chinese and Western culture,would be a worthy topic for us and that's why the author select the industrial architecture inthis period(1840—1949)as the main object to explore.Firstly,since the Yangtze River Delta suffered the most drastic shifts in modern China,in the view of culture heritage,the industrial architecture heritage influenced by the Industrial Revolution in this area is one of the substances that can reflect cotemporaneous social changes and the whole Chinese modern industrial heritage directly.The industrial architecture heritage in the Yangtze River Delta is very representative in China for two more specific reasons:On the one hand,the leaders in Westernization Movement like Li Hung-Chang,Zeng Guofan,Zuo Zongtang and Zhang Zhidong had been occupied in industrial activities there,and with the help of other engineers and architects,they established a batch of military industry and"government-supervised and merchant-managed" industry by which the Yangtze River Delta owned complete industrial categories and created many types of industry while had an great impact on the industrialization nationwide.In this progress,the industrial architecture in the Yangtze River Delta represents the styles,characteristics and achievements of the whole industrial architecture in China.On the other hand,the Yangtze River Delta with Shanghai as the center region gathered a great number of architects,architectural designing institutions.No matter they were westerner,overseas students or local architects,they worked here for a long time,So in terms of the design of industrial architecture,the industrial architecture in the Yangtze river delta region represents the typical features of national industrial building in modern China,which can reflect the combination of eastern and western thought and the architectural design concept,style and the highest level mostly.Secondly,the Yangtze River Delta region is the key location of north-south region of china,and also the coastal to west.A good location provides a good development foundation for the region's economic development and cultural communication,and this also makes the Yangtze River Delta region experienced the most dramatic social changes in modern China.From this meaning,the Cultural heritage here reflects cultural spirit of China,and it's a good reference for today's cultural heritage protection and to inheritance historic context.Since the Six dynasties,the Yangtze River Delta region is rich in culture and the elites of China was in there,ancient traditional culture here is able to save and continue.In modern China,a good geographical advantage and rich cultural foundation provides the advantageous conditions for its development of China's modern industry.The "five treaty" of Shanghai represented industrial economy and industrial technology,and the "five treaty" of Nanjing given priority to with on-the-spot "nanjing treaty" is the political center where happened major historical events,such as the Opium war,the TaiPing heavenly kingdom Movements and the republic of China to establish.Also its have a national industry city in Wuxi,Na ntong,Ningbo.As of today,China is facing to the transformation of the knowledge economy,here is still walking in front in the utilization and protection of historical and cultural heritage.Study the region's cultural heritage in protection and the sustainable development here is a good example that can provide for Chinese cultural heritage.The modern industrial buildings in China's Yangtze River Delta area,first to absorb many of the characteristics of western industrial structure,and also the integration of traditional Chinese architecture building techniques and aesthetic thoughts are mix together,then it became a band of new emerging architecture in China.Yangtze River Delta in modern industrial building heritages shows not only its own development and evolution of eastern and western cultures and blending and collision,more shows China as an important historical stage of development of important countries in east Asia and the process represented by the industrial civilization achievements,its reflected in the country and the modern society civilization transformation traditional Chinese Confucianism and the Chinese society culture ethos,value orientation,aesthetic taste and living wisdom in the special era.The research object of the thesis is modern industrial building heritages,in the second chapter to the seventh chapter,it mainly reflects the author's field investigation results,showing the major cities in Yangtze river delta in a large number of modern industrial building heritage status,System combed the period 1840-1949 China is influenced by the western industrial revolution after the development of modern industrial buildings in Yangtze river delta.Thesis chapter 8 main use the new emerging theory of the cultural heritage method,was carried out on the Yangtze river delta region of the modern industrial heritage chronological style,classification,evolution and cultural value of research.This paper puts forward the development of Chinese modern industrial buildings exist two main systems---"transplant" and "restore",then analysis the hidden in modern social and cultural change.The significance of the study of cultural heritage is that it not only pay attention to the culture of the past,but also base on the contemporary and try to serve the future development of the society.So the thesis analyses the current domestic and foreign advanced the concept and method of industrial heritage protection and utilization in chapter ten,trying to explore the protection and utilization mode of the industrial heritage in Yangtze River Delta region from different perspectives.And the author also tries to explain the outstanding value of historical and cultural heritage from a new point of view,especially through the exploration of the significance of civilization in transitional period made by industrial architecture.Under the guidance of theory of cultural heritage,the author tries to break through the existing constraints in heritage protecting theories and policies,and come up with some new ideas in the concept and method of industrial heritage protection and utilization,and obtain some meaningful enlightenment for our society.
