| Architectural photography,as an initiative subject-matter of photography,provides a reliable "figure" of the built environment.These derivative visualization products make the architectural meanings capable to be comprehended,communicated and crystallized.Consequently,a system of visual culture of architecture could be constructed.This research originates from multiple thoughts of the original issue of architectural photography,which has a long history from the beginning of the modern history of China: How to understand its seemingly broad concept but clear paradigm? How to construct a historical frame in a visual cultural system? How the modernity of architecture in China and visualization reflect each other?Architectural photography in this research is regarded as a "mechanism" that certain architectural meanings reflect on a specific field through a "visual apparatus",rather than a very consequence of image.At the same time,the concept of "China" defines a geographical boundary as well as a social and cultural convention in this research.It tries to present a transition of the principal participation of the visual culture from the Western to Chinese.Meanwhile,the historical periods are classified by the clue of production and communication of photography.Accordingly,this research could aim on the visual characteristics,dimensions of architectural translation and styles which provide an approach to the meaning of architectural visualization.The first period of modern history starts from 1844 and ends around 1927 when a modern architectural study and practice,a professional communication field as well as the comprehensive modernity of society,culture and economy were established.From then on,a modern production system of architectural photography has been found and being mature.The emerging marketization,internet and digital technology oriented production in the 90 s,dissolved the collective system and bring architectural photography into a contemporary context.Through various sources of first-hand materials,oral history,and studies on image and literature,this research established an interdisciplinary study between architecture and photography to build up a construction of architectural photography history.Besides,this research discusses the issue of modernity of architectural visualization and provide a methodology of architectural photography study. |
