History of architectural education in China is an essential part in modern transition of architecture discipline in the country.Development pattern which is concluded from truth and logic of history will provide important reference to current challenges of architectural education.Academicism architectural education stems from a classical education mode of the école des Beaux-arts in Paris.The mode was combined with higher education system and formed a systematic and efficient paradigm for training architects both in the US and China.However,with influence of social reform,academicism architectural education was regarded as a synonym of conservatism and gradually replaced by its modernism successor.Most of academics tend to believe it obstructs modern transition of architectural education after that.The dissertation aims to restore objectivity of historical facts without bias and to reveal positive meaning of academicism architectural education.Its essence is fully analyzed on two levels.The prime level is to give recognition to academicism architectural education.A macro-historical viewpoint helps to build a panorama review beyond geographical boundaries.A close attention is paid on changes in knowledge framework and institutional system.The further level is to articulate continuity of academicism architectural education in higher education and its contribution to structure modern architectural education.Introduction gives a review of relevant research and comes up with essential questions as start points of the writing.Main part of the dissertation consists of 6 chapters.The first two chapters focus on evolution of academicism architectural education in France and the US.Chapter 1 demonstrates establishment and transformation of intuitional system,especially the way this system combines with collegiate education.Chapter 2 analyzes the elements which constitute knowledge framework of architecture discipline.From Chapter 3 to 6,the dissertation concerns evolution of academicism architectural education in China with a case study of architectural education at Southeast University.Chapter 3 continues with study of the changing institutional system in Chinese architecture schools.Chapter 4 and 5 demonstrates knowledge framework from both methodology and ideology by raising a consciousness of Chinese Architecture.Chapter 6 moves to the educational reform based on critics of academicism in the 1980 s.To respond the questions which are raised at the end of Introduction,Conclusion gives a brief review of the multiple resources of architectural education and the relevance in evolution of academicism education mode across time and regions.Constant characters which are presented by the research remain an alternative ending for the discussion.The dissertation is about 257,400 words with 263 pictures and 55 charts.
