In the modernization of the near-modern society to the south of the Yangtze River,Suzhou's development is of low biasedness but high comprehensiveness.Affected by the stimulation of foreign culture and the dual influence of local and national cultural consciousness,Suzhou reflects a clearer development process of modernization than other cities. The overall decline of the city's political, economic, and cultural status is attributed to the corresponding transformation and development of the surrounding cities.By focusing on the study of near-modern architectural pedigree to the south of the Yangtze River and combining this study with the viewpoints inferred from previous genealogy research, this study emphasizes the influence of social psychology on the selection mechanism of architectural forms, delves deep into the causes for the development and evolution of the external material form of near-modern architecture in this area, and summarizes its pedigree relationship.First, interaction between the material form and social psychology of near-modern architecture to the south of the Yangtze River is elucidated, and analysis is conducted on the fact that the guiding mainstream groups of near-modern urban construction in Suzhou mainly comprise individuals from the new class transformed from the gentry class.Based on the curve of three psychological stages(cognition, emotion, and will)of individuals and groups, existing near-modern architecture can be divided into five types based on the group psychology of the relevant characters in the same period: “inspiration,” “blind obedience,”“criticism,” “selection,” and “integration.” The intertwining and overlapping relations among the types fully confirms the emphasis of genealogy on the discontinuity of history. Then,by matching the relevant forms of near-modern architecture with the pedigree of human characters, high correspondence between social psychology and material forms of architecture is established herein, indicating that the summary of guiding mainstream groups and psychology is conducive to mining the deep cultural origins of near-modern constructions.Based on the principle that an individual's psychological influence forms a group, and then, the pioneer individuals in the group perform new psychological activities to form a new group or to differentiate into subgroups,it is shown that near-modern architecture in Suzhou presents the characteristics of architectural form selection of “one-way loop” and “layer by layer loop.” It shows that in addition to the inheritance relationship between architectural forms, when new social groups are formed and their psychological activities change, there are overlapping pedigree structures between these groups in their pre-form and post-form states.Furthermore, the original social groups differentiate into subgroups, and the pre-forms and post-forms present a pedigree structure where one layer contains another.Next, considering the guiding mainstream groups and psychology of near-modern urban construction, this study discusses the relationship and differences between near-modern guiding mainstream groups and the psychology of cities to the south of the Yangtze River and matches the diachronic group background and psychological changes with the construction activities in the same period. Thus, comparisons of the material forms of near-modernarchitecture are made between different cities and Suzhou, and it is concluded that the selection of near-modern architectural forms in Suzhou is also subject to the mercantilism in Shanghai and the consciousness of political authority in Nanjing. The study also distinguishes the relation between architectural form selection of Suzhou and three other cities in the region and clarifies the pedigree structure of near-modern architecture in the south of the Yangtze River, which is a “belt community” characterized by “radiating first” to “connecting in series later.” The influence of Shanghai's outward radiation is prompt and long-lasting,and there is no absolute regime autocracy, thus forming a freely diverse similarity and different pedigree relationship with neighboring cities.Since 1927,Nanjing's influence on the unified political and cultural radiation and the intervention of the political authoritarian consciousness of the city's military and political groups has formed a constrained unified approximate pedigree relationship with the region to the south of the Yangtze River.Suzhou,Wuxi, and Changzhou connect in series with each other following the geographical cultural background, whereas Zhenjiang is closely related to the cities affected by outward radiation, forming a “belt community” pedigree structure connected with each other in series within the radiation scope of Shanghai and Nanjing. Therefore, this article mainly research on the genealogy of Suzhou near-modern architectures, and comparative analyze of the guiding mainstream groups and social psychology from city to city in the south of the Yangtze River,as well as origin and differences of the corresponding related near-modern architectures to summarized a preliminary framework of near-modern architectures in Jiangnan,in order to laid a certain foundation to further explore the Genealogy of Jiangnan near-modern architectures.
