Research On The Transformation Of The Aesthetics Of Ugliness In Chinese Novels Since 1990

There has been a huge change in the situation of the appreciation of ugliness from being unacceptable yesterday to becoming a hot topic today.Undoubtedly,such a phenomenon of distinctive and sharp contraction has lead us to serious thirnking.As an art form,appreciation of ugliness was forged in 19th century by the French symbolist poet Baudelaire and developed into a literary trend of worldwide influence.Compared with the earlier origin,fast development and great achievement of appreciation of ugliness in western countries,the origin of appreciation of ugliness in China goes back to quite a recent age.Ideological liberation movement since new period has brought new vitality to the contemporary literary world in content and forrm Owing to the introduction of western theories and shifting attitudes to ugliness in the circle of writers,some literary works began to describe ugliness in abundance which was followed by a climax.Since the 1990s,the society stepped into a diversified era with multi-dimensional value orientation because of which many dazzling phenomenon came into view and all kinds of literary phenomenon tuomed up successively or simultaneously.Of particular interest was novel writing by writers witnessed the development tendency from simple appreciation to further research of ugliness step by step.Unfortunately,we did not pay more attention to the changing conditions of appreciation of ugliness in the complex context of current literature development.Given this,we try to make a breakthrough in the status quo of research on appreciation of ugliness,establish an overall research perspectives on the appreciation of ugliness in contemporary Chinese literature and develop a new narrative pattern of appreciation of ugliness.This paper not only takes theoretical exposition into account,but also tries to study on the changing appreciation of ugliness from the ontological perspective,especially grasping the evolvement of appreciation of ugliness on the basis of intermal factors,such as novel narrations to provide a certain reference to the creation and development of contemporary literarature.The thesis is divided into three main parts,including an introduction,chapter one to five and a conclusion.Among them,the second chapter to the fifth chapter are the main part of the paper which is composed of the emphatic inspection,excavation and analysis of specific changing situation of appreciation of ugliness in novel since 1990s.The first four chapters mainly discuss the evolution of appreciation of ugliness in novels from levels of culture,humanity and value(namely,popular aesthetics,appreciation of evil and ugly addiction)in sequence.The fifth chapter has carried on the overall investigation of relationship between different levels of the evolution of appreciation of ugliness and a new change of novel narrative ethics since 1990s.The section of introduction focuses on the description and judgment of characteristics of appreciation of ugliness in Chinese and western social culture and serves as a component of "evolution of appreciation of ugliness in novels since 1990s"in research topic of this paper.This part makes an overall presentation from the following four levels,including the origin of the issues,significance of selected topic and value of academic history,the carding and reflection of current research status,as well as the research and academic goals.The first chapter presents a carding of the academic history of Chinese contemporary literature's overall condition of appreciation of ugliness since the new period to show the "flowing" context of appreciation of ugliness in literature.This chapter includes the diachronic pursuit of evolution of appreciation of ugliness in literature since new period which is divided into three periods in common sense for describing and studying,such as literature in new period,literature in 1990s and literature in the new century.But because time of 30 years is not a long time from the literary point of view and the status of literary phenomena and trends is of great abundance and complexity,boundaries of the three periods we have outlined are not clear completely and sort of clues just give prominence to particular stage.As a research paradigm,appreciation of ugliness of evolution context from new period and inevitability would be clarified.The second chapter focuses on the discussion of evolution of appreciation of ugliness in novel from the level of culture.This chapter emphasizes the specific situation of popular aesthetic expressed in the cultural level of evolution of appreciation of ugliness,including differentiation and analysis of logical level of reasons and background,manifestations and the evolution from appreciation of ugliness to popular aesthetics.In this chapter,both "presence" and "absence" of aesthetic subject,the" "ppreciation of ugliness" and the" desire" of aesthetic form and simulation of fuzzy image of aesthetic spirit in novels of this stage are analyzed significantly.Evolution from " appreciation of ugliness" to "popular aesthetic" could be regarded as a new kind of aesthetics to some extent.However,it is its mediocrity of essence that makes it difficult to become a "Vague" aesthetics in the true sense.The third chapter focuses on the discussion of evolution of appreciation of ugliness in novel from the level of humanity.In the aspect of humanity of appreciation of ugliness in novels,various focusing " evil" factors appeared in fiction since the 1990s which likes the opened " Pandora's Box".This chapter focuses on the evolution from appreciation of ugliness to appreciation of evil.As the core of the level of humanity,manifestations and logic of appreciation of evil would be conceemed from three aspects,including the social figurative representation of'evil ",the latent cultural essence of the " evil" and the more abstract humanity " evil" which is the ultimate point of the above two.To be sure,the appreciation of evil is the reconstruction of new appreciation of ugliness on the basis of deconstruction of appreciation of ugliness.In fact,such a reconstruction of appreciation of ugliness is the reconstruction of a contemporary aesthetics.However,with regard to appreciation of evil,it possesses the co-existence of profoundness and damage.The fourth chapter revolves around the evolution of the appreciation 'of ugliness in the level of values.In this level,"ugliness addiction" is no doubt subverting and deconstructing the appreciation of ugliness.This chapter mainly analyses the evolution from appreciation to addiction,how and in what ways it happened and the logical deduction it indicated.Chapter 3 looks at the problem about subversion and deconstruction and the characteristics featuring " ugliness of shabbiness "," ugliness of decadent","ugliness of absurdity " respectively which pointed beyond the form of values and the spiritual tendency.It is this strong subversion that makes the factor of appreciation most uncertain in addiction which always stuck in the chaotic and disordered state of generalization of values and even the tendency of no value or anti-values.The fifth chapter gives details about this special and dynamical evolution by discussing the complicated interactions and correlated denying of each other since the 1990s.Three aspects-whether it is from the prospective of literature or folk culture;whether anti-appreciation is for the appreciation of ugliness or the approval of beauty;whether pursuing spirit is inspiring or for the appreciation of beauty,---have been dialectically studied.Researches from these particular angles offer not only the correlations of the different levels of evolution,but also the dialectical view on it in specific works.Besides,discussions on the brand-new problem between the evolution and the ethics of the novel's narration since 1990s mainly focus on two aspects—realistic ethics in free narration and human expression in individual narration respectively.The final chapter of this dissertation gives a condensed conclusion about the form of the evolution of appreciation of ugliness and its characteristics of the appreciation of beauty.Meanwhile,my dissertation,to some extent,is capable of serving as a meaningful inspiration for contemporary literature by explaining the evolution and predicting the future direction of literature in this new century.
