The short novel "Embarking on A Long Journey at the Age of 18 ", which was written by Yu Hua in the 1980s, has made the author a rising star in the modern literary world. With an aberrant cognition of life, he has never used normal means to write books or observe life. The theme, narrative means and linguistic style of his novels are unique, which makes his novels flying their own flags in the world of pioneering novelsAs the author has once said:"I write for the nihil", "Never can one experience the vastness of the world unless he talks to his soul." The author, looking into the essence of life and the universe, has created a nebulous world of metaphor and made his works gloomy and weird. This peculiar and objective'narration exposes every form of ugliness and violence so as to evoke special soul resonance among readers. At present, There are numerous studies and comments on Yu Hua. All of these studies and comments, focusing on his novels'theme, narration style, influence and national tradition, have been fruitful. This thesis tries to discover values hidden in Yu Hua's pioneering works from a perspective that examines what to be ugly, and investigate and affirm the literary value of ugly images in modernism, such as violence, horror, foreignization, nihil and death, etc.
