The fruitful research findings about Eileen Zhang(Ailing Zhang) from the literature perspective have formed “Zhang Studies”, but few scholars study from the aesthetic perspective. This paper attempts to analysis her novels from four aspects: emotional keynote, aesthetic style of characters, narrative modes and resplendent literature language. The author thinks that the emotional keynote of her novels is tragic. However, the tragedy is not “thorough”, because the life of small characters penned by her show no great rejoices and sorrows or great kindness and evilness. As to the aesthetic style of characters in Zhang’s novels, Zhang did not sing praises of sincerity, kindness and beauty of characters like other writers did. Instead, she concentrates her writer’s eyes on the ugly side of characters. In her novels, characters are ugly in terms of appearance, shape, speech and behaviors. The ugliness is a reflection of their internal uneasiness, deficiency and nervousness. The narration aesthetic style of Zhang’s novels is also unique. She enhanced the popularity of her novels by adopting the “story-telling” narrative structure. Different from most Chinese writers, she prefers to the anticlimax writing technique, which is attributed to the influence of Western literature. The language of Zhang’s novels is extremely resplendent and powerful. The classic beauty of her novel language is based on her reference to ancient Chinese literature. Besides, The language of her novels is rhythmic and fanciful. It is a feast to eyes, smell and touch to read her novels. The aesthetic characters of Zhang’s novels are quite different from others. Her control of the sense of tragedy, her unique perspective of focusing on the ugly side of characters, her anticlimax narrative style and her unique resplendent novel language, all these endow her novels with ever-lasting charm in the history of modern literature.
