The Chinese classical novel Jin Ping Mei,which has been translated into as many as more than ten languages,including English,Japanese,German,Russian,French,etc.,is widely spreading throughout the whole world.The present thesis,with the two full English versions of Jin Ping Mei rendered respectively by Clement Egerton and David Roy,as the research objects,aims to approach the translated text from a micro-linguistic level,in the hope of presenting the textual features of the translations by making comparisons in terms of translation strategies and methods.More specificly,the thesis first symmetrically discusses the features of different English translations,on the basis of some typical examples from the original work;secondly,the paper not only deals with the translated text itself,but also probes the deep factors affecting the features of different English versions,including the translator's subjectivity,the translation strategies of domestication and foreignization,the effects of academic study of Jin Ping Mei on its translation,as well as the constraints of the historical and cultural context on translation strategies,from which the author hopes to explore the translation strategies from a deeper level.The present paper consists of seven sections:Chapter one "Introduction" includes the purpose,the present achievements,research theory and methods,research innovativeness,and the developmental structure of the thesis;Chapter two "An Introduction to the English Translations of Jin Ping Mei" makes a brief introduction to the different translators and translated texts of Jin Ping Mei,and also probes into the different Chinse original texts of Jin Ping Mei on which the two English versions were based;Chapter three "The English Translation of Sexual Description of Jin Ping Mei",based on the sexual descriptions in the book,discusses the different strategies and methods employed by the translators,aiming at analyzing the different translation strategies and methods for the sexual descriptions in Jin Ping Mei,and tries to present the existing forms of sexual descriptions in different English versions;Chapter four "The English Translation of the Linguistic Features in the Jin Ping Mei" studies the translations of the peculiar linguistic phenomena in the book,including four-word idioms,slangs,proverbs,Xie Hou Yu,aiming at comparing the linguistic styles reflected and conveyed in different translated texts;Chapter Five "the English Translation of Cultural Words in Jin Ping Mei" mainly covers the translations of some culture-loaded words in the Jin Ping Mei,with the foods,clothing,customary entertainments,seasonal days as the main focus;Chapter six"Probing into the translation strategies of Jin Ping Mei",by employing the achievements in the Descriptive Translations Studies,put emphasis on the macro-aspect of the study,and is treated as the theoretical development of the whole research,aiming at probing the deep reasons for the translators' motivations and strategies;Chapter seven "Conclusion" includes the review,the limitations and the room for further research,and also the insight the study has brought for the translation of the classical Chinese works.In addition,two appendixes are attached to the thesis:they are the interviews with the David Roy and Katherine Carlitz respectively.
