This disertation takes the American composer Aaron Jay Kernis as the starting point,taking example of three large orchestral works representatives in the late 20 th and early 21 st centuries,focusing on his composing techniques,including pitch materials,motivational development,form and structures,and texture and orchestration.Also his life change,and explore its personal musical language,style and artistic aesthetics in his three different periods.The first chapter,Kernis' experience of growth and life,as well as the introduction of various period of compositions.The second chapter,<Colored Filed> made by the large orchestra of the double-stringed band with the analysis of pitch materials,motivational development,curved structure,texture and orchestration,explores the compositional techniques,aesthetics and styles that he tends to use in the second period.The third chapter,exploring the process of motive,theme development and the structure of variation,form,the texture and the orchestration of his large orchestral work <Color Wheel>,to explore his third stage of the composing techniques,aesthetics and style.The fourth chapter,is an analysis of the horizontal and vertical pitch materials,harmony,structure,texture and orchestration for the large orchestra work <Newly Drawn Sky>,to explore his fourth stage of the composing techniques,aesthetics and style.The conclusions are comparing of his three different periods of Kernis' orchestral works: 1.The similarities between compositional techniques of three orchestra works in three different periods.2.Differences between compositional techniques,aesthetic tendencies and personal feelings between three orchestra works in different periods.3.The connection between composing techniques,emotional expressions,aesthetics and Neo-romanticism in the three orchestra works.
