Ha Jin,who has published many works and won many literary awards during the 1990 s in the United States,is a representative of the new immigrant writers of the United States and China. In his literary practice, the works of novels are the main content. These novels often take Chinese social life as a situation, try to show a fabled social view: from content point of view, the novels often use the role-shaping as a point of penetration to carry out the historical narrative of such important events as the "Cultural Revolution" and "Reform and Opening".From linguistic form point of view, the works of novel mainly use English as the medium of language. The mixed use of mother tongue and foreign language in novels plays a role of cultural delineation and word order regulation in the expression of new immigrant writers. It also can be thought as an instantiation of the writer's cross-cultural position. The writer also use intertextuality writing approach to shape the relationship of texts into an open architecture that includes both the past and the present. In such writings,a text relies on existing texts and needs to control the accuracy of language expression. In a word,Ha Jin's artistic expression in his novels further proves that the creation of cross-cultural artistic features depends not only on the writers' cultural identity, but also on their writing skills and language. Therefore, combing the details of the language and text in Ha Jin's novels is the key to understand and verify the cross-cultural attributes of writers. In fact, this situation of cultural communication borders is shared by new immigrant writers, who are dubbed "literary bats",because they exist in the space of Chinese contemporary literature in a non-bird,non-beast,and non-independent state, and suffer from hesitation and identity between "native" and "foreign native".This thesis takes Ha Jin's study under the cross-cultural perspective as the study goal, combs and studies in theory of the creation of Ha Jin and his major novels, and makes an in-depth interpretation of several Ha Jin's excellent works with "cross-cultural" characteristics. The thesis begins with the detail of the writer's second language writing and intertextual writing in the novels to explain the cross-cultural characteristics of Ha Jin.On the basis of understanding the works,it further explores the relevant issues of the new immigrant writers represented by Ha Jin.This thesis is divided into four parts. The first chapter undertakes the literature review of Ha Jin's study made by the introduction, makes a theoretical analysis of the emergence and development of new immigrant writers,Ha Jin's own experience and literary creation and Ha Jin's main works. As far as the analysis of "new immigrant writers" is concerned, this chapter makes a comparative analysis of Ha Jin's literary practice with other works of new immigrant writers. The so-called "new immigrant writers" and immigrant writers have slight differences in the connotation of the concept. There is a shift of writers' values in the creative practice of new immigrant literature,so this chapter takes the "immigrants" which is the narrative object as the key issues to read the new immigrant literature in detail. This chapter also gives a supplementary explanation of study background from Ha Jin's life experiences and main creation works that offer the necessary literature review and study preparation for the systematic study of Ha Jin's works in the next chapters. The second chapter starts with the linguistic form of the works, trying to explain the textual structure of Ha Jin's works of novels. This chapter uses the word "translational writing" as the key word, analyzes the text, language and writing style of Ha Jin's main novels. On one hand, this chapter focuses on the paragraphs in the works of novels that exist the content of the mother tongue migration, and makes a detailed analysis of the writer's capacity with the second language base on the full understanding of the text.On the other hand,it also discusses the artistic characteristics of Ha Jin's novels, using "zero writing" as a study topic, and analyzes the works according to the interpretation of the concepts of intransitive writing and non-essential expression in the works. The third chapter analyzes the text of Ha Jin's novels using "intertextual writing" as the core, based on the study of these text, this chapter also analyzes literary thoughts such as meta-historical narration and situationist international, that has the possible influence on Ha Jin's creation activities. At the same time, this chapter makes a reflection on the narrative form of the works based on the study results of the concept of hypertext and intertextual writing, and makes a detailed analysis base on the several major novels. The fourth chapter focuses on the concept of "cross-cultural" to study the literary thoughts of Ha Jin's novels.Based on the cultural identity of new immigrant writers, this chapter analyzes the purpose of writers in cross-cultural writing and artistic connotation of works. This chapter does not study the content of the novels completely according to the framework of classification, but carries out a more open text analysis of Ha Jin's main novels, and hopes to carry out a deeper study of literary thought.
