This thesis is a research paper on Lang Jingshan,a pioneer in the early photography ofChina.Based on various relevant files, interview records and other materials,it sorts outLang's life stories and describes the background of times when he lived;and by depictingthe path that Lang had travelled,it discusses a series of problems in the development ofearly photography in China, illustrates them with Lang's representative works "apotpourri of photographs" and traditional Chinese aesthetics, and talks about Lang'saccomplishments and aesthetic artistic choice in these artistic contexts.By researching hisartistic characteristics, this essay intends to relate Lang to the times when he lived, seriously evaluate the due aesthetic value of his art in that particular era.Lang'sphotography is a typical example of "Chinese essence and Western utility." He "adoptedtraditional Chinese painting theories and created through good intent the works of beautywith practical value," and that was unique at that time,of course.Lang carried on theaesthetic tradition as most Chinese painters do,and with his works known as "Long'sstyle" among Westerners, his artistic creation was centered on the core concept thatbeauty in form surpasses the beauty in nature. He paid much attention to his personartistic cultivation and value, made efforts to discuss the perfect combination of "artisticquality" and "truth," and consciously developed his aesthetic taste and followed his aesthetic pursuit, both of which featured traditional aesthetic appreciation. Now that Langholds an evident position in the history of photography, the space where Lang shaped hisartistic development cannot be ignored:Shanghai as a cultural region in China's earlycontact with the outside world directly influenced the development of modern art inChina, and deserves to be researched. The background and nutrition of times guidedLang's artistic creation, and fostered his artistic disposition and creative ideas;correspondingly, the perfect integration of his skills and taste shaped his aestheticaccomplishments in the end.
