Traditional Chinese painting is a representative type of the Chinese painting art,and its health promotion function, which belongs to the field of "Substance and Function Aesthetics",has been emphasized along with the development of literati painting. It's the reason why painting had never been valued by the elite in ancient China but then cultural elites were delighted at it and devoted to studying it.This part of Chinese painting is at a high level, which can be interpreted by the Taoism. However, its normal development became stagnant due to the earth-shaking changes of external environment in late Qing Dynasty and the early period of the Republic of China.Besides, because the current existence environment, development model, personnel composition and nature of Chinese painting are far different from those before the stagnation, the health promotion function of Chinese painting, which has been consciously pondered over and explored,is still in a state of insufficient attention and research in its field. In view of this, this paper aims to analyze the historical process and core issues of the health promotion function of Chinese painting and tries to find answers from a new perspective,in order to deepen the study on Chinese painting. This paper, taking Chinese painting as the object, begins its research from the principle of the entire health promotion chain instead of those specific health promotion types(such as health promotion of Taoist,Taoism,Confucianism,or Traditional Chinese Medicine)to find the basis and position for the health promotion of Chinese painting. This paper analyzes the issue of "health promotion of Chinese painting" that has been talked about for a long time but without in-depth exploration by using methods such as literature study, comparative analysis, interdisciplinary analysis and interview. This research is also based on the theories of calligraphy and painting and the comparison of health promotion function between Chinese painting and western painting art. This paper gives its focus on the differences of health promotion function of Chinese painting caused by different subjective initiatives of the artists, discusses the different effects between freehand brushwork and realistic painting in health promotion, the differences in health promotion among different painting subjects.Besides, the comprehensive quality required in the Freehand brush work of literati, and the health promotion function in the process of creation and appreciation are also essential in this paper. This paper holds that the health promotion of Chinese painting is a combination of motion and stillness but mainly static. Its core is spiritual cultivation, but the physical cultivation part is significant as well. With all aspects considered,it is indeed a perfect way of health promotion.Problems such as cervical spondylosis will not occur as long as behaviors are controlled within a certain limit. If you do not pay attention, other forms of behavior may cause similar problems. The paper has three main parts. The first part including Chapter ? and Chapter ?explains the principle and historical evolution of the health promotion function of Chinese painting generally. The second part consists of Chapter ?.Chapter IV and Chapter V,and it analyzes the health promotion function of Chinese painting from different perspectives. The last part of this paper tries to bring forward solutions to the deficiency in the health promotion of Chinese painting. The details are as follows. The first chapter explains the long-debated concept of "Chinese painting",defines the concept of health promotion and summarizes its principles. On this basis,it continues to analyze the relationship between the health promotion function and other generally recognized aesthetic and educational functions in Chinese painting, trying to identify the characteristics and position of health promotion function. There are two ways for the health promotion function of Chinese painting to work in the health promotion chain. One is to lift the spirit and nourish the soul, which can regulate people's temperament and improve people's personality in the long run.The other is to preserve life, which has something in common with Qigong(an ancient Chinese healing art involving meditation, controlled breathing and movement exercises)and Tai Chi,and helps to regulate people physically. The occurrence of the health promotion function of Chinese painting is hierarchical and has direct relation with the level art reaches. The stage that art reaches has achieved perfect docking with the level the health promotion function reaches.A high-level artistic cultivation is a must if various levels of health promotion of Chinese painting and calligraphy can be realized.Chapter two describes the evolution of the health promotion of Chinese painting, and successively discusses the meaning of health promotion implied in the theory of "free mind" and "spiritual tour" in landscape paintings of Wei-Jin Dynasties, the"replacement for multiple desires" put forward in Sui and Tang Dynasties, the pursuit of "complacency" "satisfaction" and "full satisfaction" in freehand and literati paintings of Song Dynasty and Ming Dynasty, the comprehensive development of health promotion of Chinese painting in Qing Dynasty, the transformation from "health promotion" to "life cultivation" in late Qing Dynasty and the popularization and extroversion of health promotion in the contemporary era.The paper points out that the health promotion function of Chinese painting is closely related to "painting with calligraphy".In the new era,it is the absence of calligraphy in Chinese painting that not only weakens its health promotion function, but also affects the inheritance of Chinese painting and the preservation of its characteristics. At the beginning of Chapter 3,the concepts of literati painting, freehand brushwork and realistic painting are defined. But this chapter mainly focuses on the difference and comparison of identity, internal creative motivation, and corresponding artwork style among Chinese painting artists, and their influence on health promotion on the artistic level. Then, this link appears:the difference in artwork aesthetics determines the difference in creative process, which will further produce different health promotion effect. From this part, the author believes the literati freehand brushwork can better reflect the health promotion feature of Chinese painting.Chapter 4 firstly describes the creative process of literati freehand brushwork and continues to discuss the health promotion function of it.We all know it's the literati who create literati freehand brushwork, but with the vigorous development of this art form,it,in turn, requires certain qualities of the literati, including cultural literacy, calligraphy skill, and moral integrity. Therefore, the benefits of these qualities, like reading for nourishing the spirit, painting with calligraphy for emotion expression, and acquisition of ease and comfort from observing things in peace, are also good for the creation of literati freehand brushwork and naturally, the artworks are given with health promotion implication. But it works the best if people choose the art of painting as the way for self-cultivation on their own. This chapter mainly analyzes the health promotion function of the elements in the creation of literati freehand brushwork, such as environment, stationery, psychological status, physical condition, aesthetic appreciation and specific painting skill.Centered on three main subjects of Chinese painting(landscape painting,bird-and-flower painting, figure painting),Chapter 5 analyzes their positions on health promotion. They have different health promotion effect due to the difference in the following aspects:development stage, literati's attention, and their own features. It turns out landscape painting takes the lead because aesthetic appreciation of mountains and rivers is beneficial to human mind and body, while figure painting and bird-and-flower painting are both lost courses. Then,on the basis of the analysis, together with changeability of human characters, character's influence on illness as well as the emotion interaction theory of traditional Chinese medicine, the author gives three subjects diverse art character and try to match them with human characters, hoping for the healthy development of human mind and body.Historically, scholars of calligraphy and painting only focus on the advantage of its health promotion function, and overlook the deficiency. In accordance with the actual situation in painter group, the last part analyzes possible deficiencies and tries to provide solutions from various perspectives. At last, the author believes the problems of health promotion in painting area are caused by the person who participates in this practice instead of the art itself, and the problems could be absolutely avoided if the person is more cautious and strengthens the awareness of health promotion.
