Haruki Murakami(1949—)is a famous Japanese modern novelist and literary translator, whose works have earned him renown both at home and abroad. In the past 40 years his works have become immensely popular. As of 2018,his books are sold in over 40 countries and regions around the world and have been translated into more than 50 languages. The widespread availability of his works has gained Murakami fans all over the world, which in turn has aroused the long-term attention of academic circles in various countries.Although extensive research has been conducted on Haruki Murakami and his works,it is often plagued with problems and limitations. For example, many Chinese researchers have conducted only fragmentary studies on environmental factors, values, and self-marketing strategies that they attribute to Haruki Murakami's reputation. In short,Chinese scholars have not yet thoroughly or systematically studied the reasons for Murakami's fame around the world. This is a problem which urgently needs to be solved. The cause of Murakami's renown is also the subject of this dissertation. This dissertation is separated into 6 sections: an introduction,4 main chapters, and a conclusion. Most of the studies in China have been the comments on Haruki Murakami's works,or the analyses of his certain work,or the comparative studies with other writers.Concerning the limitations of research materials and academic perspectives, previous studies are unlikely to fully and systematically analyze Haruki Murakami and his works. This study will use a combination of various research methods and a basis of complex dynamic theories to analyze a large number of Haruki Murakami's works in order determine the relationships between the environmental factors affecting Murakami's fame. Some of the research methods used in this study are as follows: interdisciplinary research method, sociological research method, discourse analysis, and comparative analysis. In addition, this paper will further analyze the values formed by Haruki Murakami and the international causes of his global self-marketing strategies. At the macro level, this study dynamically analyzes the environmental factors affecting Haruki Murakami's fame and summarizes those factors. Some of those factors include family environment factors, social environment factors, political environment factors, and economic environment factors. These factors interact with each one another and play different roles at different times. At the micro level, this study analyzes the values of Haruki Murakami and summarizes that Murakami has freedom of creativity, bravery, integrity, perseverance, and went from not being involved in politics to being politically involved. This research mainly analyzes the characteristics of Haruki Murakami's literary works from three points of view: distinctiveness, complexity, and resonance. The distinctiveness of his works mainly results from his way of thinking, writing skills, and growing up as an only child. The complexity of his works mainly stems from internationalization of culture, entertainment, religious integration, and myth relevance. The resonance of his works is one of the key factors affecting his fame. This study mainly analyzes the resonance characteristics of his works from 3 points of view: the sense of loss caused by the disappointment in politics and family life,a sense of loneliness caused by the pursuit of individuality, and the aggressive behaviors induced by fragility. This research examines and compares the self-marketing strategies of Haruki Murakami in Japan and the United States.Furthermore, this study observes that the subjectivity of Murakami's works mainly reveals itself in two aspects: first,it is based on Haruki Murakami as a translator to examine his subjectivity;second,it is based on the position of his works' translators to investigate his subjectivity. This research systematically examines the possibility of Haruki Murakami winning a Nobel Literature Prize.Specifically, the unlikely possibility that Murakami will be awarded a Nobel Literature Prize during his lifetime is analyzed with the following factors in mindthe basic characteristics of the Nobel Literature Prize, the importance of "recommendation" and "translation",and the characteristics of the “system of rotation” of the Nobel Literature Prize. However, the annual survey asking whether or not Haruki Murakami can win the Nobel Literature Prize is a brilliant propaganda strategy, highlighting the diversity and development of his international reputation. Most writers are unknown or only well-known in their own countries before winning the award. After winning the award, they become famous overnight.Media coverage before and after winning the award is day and night.Acquiring well-known literary prizes outside one's home country is a major avenue for the development of a writers' international fame. This study hopes to further the research of Haruki Murakami in Chinese academia, supplement the research data on Haruki Murakami available in China, and improve cultural exchanges between Japan and China. It not only provides reference value for international literature exchanges, but also affords practical reference and theoretical guidance for the literary writers in East Asia and around the world.
