The history of studying scholium on Mao Zhuan can be traced back to the Song Dynasty from the perspective of excavated documents. The later generation scholars have inherited many this tradition's wonderful principles and achieved abundant accomplishments. This paper uses the excavated documents to investigate Mao Zhuan based on the research results of predecessors and contemporary scholars. The conclusions can be confirmed or corrected the errors of Mao Zhuan. The first chapter is a concentrated explanation of Mao Zhuan. The first section mainly discusses how Mao Zhuan uses phonetic explanations and meaning explanations to explain words. The content of the phonetic explanations can be summarized into four kinds of types and the content of meaning explanations can be summarized into two types. The second section mainly explains how Mao Zhuan interprets verses. We divide them into two categories: interpreting the meaning of sentences and construing the verses. The third section firstly discusses the use of exegetical terminology in Mao Zhuan.Secondly, the third section discusses how Mao Zhuan analyzes the grammatical relationship in the Book of Songs, which involves the explanations of word order and function words. Finally,we discuss the dissertations on “Xing” style in Mao Zhuan. The fourth section is a revelation of the limitations on Mao Zhuan. The focus of this discussion is on "Wang Wen Sheng Xun",which is divided into two categories based on the causes of the error. In the second chapter, this paper tries to demonstrate the correctness and accuracy of Mao Zhuan by the excavated documents respectively. The first section firstly absorbs typical cases from academic circle and then discusses the words“Tan(?)”,“Huang(?)”,“Gancheng(??)”,“Ci(?)”,“Yu(?)”.We agree with these explanations in Mao Zhuan. As an ancient Confucian classic, the Book of Songs often uses borrowed words. However,Mao Zhuan can make accurate interpretations in most cases,so the content of the second section is mainly related to the interpretations of borrowed words in the Book of Songs. In this section,we have discussed the words of“Liu(?)”,“Lv(?)”,“Su(?)”and“Gu(?)”.Thispaper believes these words can be understood as interchangeable words respectively including“Jiu(?)”,“Li(?)”,“Cu(?)”,“Gu(?)”.In the third chapter, this paper posts further explanations of Mao Zhuan. This chapter is divided into two sections. The first section mainly uses excavated documents to explain the unreleased words in Mao Zhuan. The second section posts further explanations that have been released in Mao Zhuan. These two sections both analyze the words in the Book of Songs on the basis of existing achievements from academic circle. These words include“Tao(?)”,“Wei Yi(??)”,“Qiang(?)”and“Mao Wu(??)”in the Book of Songs. The fourth chapter is a correction of Mao Zhuan. This chapter is divided into three sections based on the causes of errors in Mao Zhuan. The first and second section tries to correct Mao Zhuan from phonetic and meaning aspects respectively. Not only we demonstrate the words of“Feng(?)”,“Chan(?)”,“Yi(?)”,“Qun(?)”,“Zhong Gou(??)”,“Chang Gu(??)”,but also explain the word“Yin Yin(??)”.In addition, the first and second section also analyze several problems that need to pay attention to when the scholar deciphers the scholium in Mao Zhuan. The problems include a combination of the characters'pattern, meaning and phonetic interpretation. In the third section, this paper absorbs the latest research achievements in the academic circle.Since the academic circle still have controversies on some problems, this section classifies them into other categories and does not give a obligatory explanation. Finally, this paper has made some thoughts on the formation and circulation of the Book of Songs in the historical period. This paper has discussed four major problems, including the Formation and Stereotypes of the Book of Songs, the Spread of the Book of Songs, the Reasons of the Words' Evolution, the Timeline of the Words' Evolution in the Book of Songs and other issues.
