Discourse System In China's National Image Construction

National image and discourse system,closely related to national cultural soft power and discourse power,are not only part of national comprehensive power,but represent national comprehensive power as well.Analyzing the development of China image in western and Chinese discourse systems,this dissertation aimed to reveal the theoretical and logical inconsistance in the field of Chinese national image construction.More than that,the dissertation also aimed to make understood the the dilemma,prospect,mechanism and route of contemporary Chinese characteristic socialist or Marxist discourse system construction.The core of this dissertation was how to improve Chinese cultural soft power.The topic of the dissertation was what image was the ideal China image and how to achieve this goal,by stressing the importance of discourse system in the process of national image construction and how to make China understood across the world.The way was how to improve China image through the reconstruction of Chinese discourse system and the end was increasing consensus,mutual understanding and even national governance system and capability.Theoretically,the purpose of dissertation was how to improve national identity and how to increase self-confidence in socialist road,socialist theory,socialist system and Chinese Culture.In practice,the dissertation emphasized enhancing Chinese cultural soft power and Marxist discourse power.The dissertation consists of 7 chapters.The first chapter,reviewing the relevant research,introduced the background,significance and bright ideas of this dissertation.The second chapter answered the question of what was national image and discourse system and explained their mutual inner relationship.Basic theories in this field were also introduced.Of special value was the introduction of discourse mechanism including self-effacement,universal value,discourse fact and discourse persona.Currently,researchers in the area of national image had no adequate focus on discourse mechanism.This academic inadequacy contained our understanding of discourse system in national image construction.The four points in discourse mechanism reached the inner heartland of discourse system.In Chapter Three,historical experience and current advantages in the national image construction by improving discourse system in western countries were reviewed and provided for our country.The countries in former Soviet Union and eastern European regions neglected the importance of and weakened the ideological discourse system,which led to the collapse of their national images.Four emerging countries' endeavor to enhance their national image by improving discourse system were also analyzed.The analysis of the logic between discourse system and national image in the above mentioned countries provide valuable experience for China.Chapter Four,one of the key chapters,reviewing our leadership's achievement in national image construction and discourse system improvement and summarizing the positive experience,provided a clear direction for our country.Among the ideas in this chapter,the proposal about worship of western discourse system reflecting China's weak national image is of kind of originality,for the analysis revealed the root of our country's inconfidence in our socialist road,socialist theory,socialist system and culture.Therefore,it is of special value for the construction of contemporary China's national image,as well as recovering our confidence in our culture.Chapter Five,another key chapter,focused on the analysis of the surprising gap between China's great development achievement and discourse disadvantage.The aim of this chapter was to identify the core of the problem in our national image and discourse system construction and to provide a solid foundation for solving problem.The reason for the long-term negative China national image is the lack of new concept,new paradigm,new expression.Hence the awkward situation of the inadequacy in expressing China's own interest and the passive position when China is facing western discourse system.Chapter Six proposed the possible strategies and tactics for innovating China's discourse system in our country's national image construction.Strategically,top-level design for keeping Marxist discourse power in control should be carefully planned and implemented,disciplinary system,academic system and discourse system being taken into consideration and constructed as a whole.In the meantime,we should draw fresh idea and vivid expression from the masses.More than that,we should also learn from and emulate western great civilization to develop our discourse system,reinterpret Chinese traditional culture to integrate discourse system,implement discourse system project to innovate discourse system.Chapter Seven summarized and emphasized the main ideas of this dissertation.First,while national image was based on social development level of a given country,it is not in equal level with material power and in mutual dependence with discourse system.Secondly,China national image was contained by western hegemonic discourse system.We had to deconstruct western discourse system for the purpose of constructing our country's national image according to our strategic demand.Thirdly,China national image was also contained by contemporary Chinese discourse system.We had to reconstruct contemporary Chinese discourse system to construct China national image in accordance with our development.Fourthly,we should pay close attention to academic discourse system to reconstruct China national image,for it provided academic support,authority and credibility for national image.What was inadequate and what should be done in the future were stated in the last chapter.
