In the past 40 years,China's manufacturing industry has developed at a dramatical speed,we have to admitted that there is still a gap between CMI and manufacturing industry in developed countries. On the one hand, the manufacturing industry is the main engine that boosts the rapid development of China's economy, and it is also the largest economic sector in China.According to the World Energy Statistics Yearbook published by BP Petroleum Corporation in 2018,China's energy consumption increment in 2017 accounted for about one-third of the world's energy consumption increment. At the meantime,China's manufacturing energy consumption accounted for more than one-third in China. Therefore, studying the energy efficiency of China's manufacturing industry is of great significance to the resolution of energy problems in China and the world. The existing paper do not pay enough attention to the research on energy efficiency of China's manufacturing industry, especially that of different regions. To fill the gap,we overcome the difficulty of data availibility and use econometric to do a comprehensive study on energy efficieny of China's manufacturing industry, including single factor energy efficiency and total factor energy efficiency. We use energy intensity to represent the single factor energy efficiency. Then we calculate the static total factor energy efficiency and dynamic total factor energy efficiency. After that,we use Malmquist index to decompose dynamic total factor energy efficiency into three parts:efficiency effect, technological advance effect and catch-up effect. Results shows that there is differences among three region's energy efficiency and energy efficiency of eastern region is better than that of middle and western region. The dynamic total factor energy efficiency of three region is over 1 from 2000-2015,indicating that energy efficiency of three region is improved. In addition, the results of the decomposition analysis show that technological progress has a major impact on the improvement of manufacturing energy efficiency, and the manufacturing energy efficiency of various provinces and cities has a "catch-up effect"on the frontier. After constructing a comprehensive and objective manufacturing energy efficiency evaluation system, this paper further explores three problems:what affects the energy efficiency, how technological advance influence energy saving and what is the amount of energy saving. In the fourth chapter,we first study the relationship between industrial agglomeration and manufacturing energy efficiency from the perspective of provinces. The results show that there is a nonlinear relationship between manufacturing industry agglomeration and total factor energy efficiency.Technological advance will promote energy efficiency, but whether the energy efficiency improvement caused by technological progress can achieve the expected energy saving and emission reduction effect is a problem worth studying. In the fifth chapter, this paper studies the problem of energy rebound effect. The results show that the rebound effect of China's manufacturing industry is 44.2%.The energy efficiency improvement caused by technological advance can promote energy conservation, but due to the rebound effect, part of energy saving will be offset. In the sixth chapter, this paper verifies the long-term equilibrium relationship between manufacturing energy consumption and China's economic development, industrial structure and energy price. The results show that there is a long-term equilibrium relationship between the four variables. Finally, this paper uses the long-term equilibrium relationship to predict the future energy consumption of the manufacturing industry. The forecast results show that the maximum energy-saving potential of China's manufacturing industry in 2030 can reach 395.69 mtce.In summary, the study found that the energy efficiency of China's manufacturing industry is improving year by year, but still has a large space for energy conservation. Moreover, there is a big gap in energy efficiency between the three regions. In the process of post-development,more policy resources should be tilted to promote the transfer of technology and capital to the central and western regions.Increasing the industrial agglomeration of manufacturing industries can improve manufacturing industry's energy efficiency. In addition,Chinese government should take measures like total energy control policy and energy price marketization to reduce the energy rebound effect.Optimizing the industrial structure and increasing energy prices can also effectively reduce energy consumption in China's manufacturing industry without sacrificing economic development.
