The Consumption Of Migrant Workers And Its Influence On The Process Of Urbanization

China's economic growth has transformed from the dependence from investment and export to the strategic time of the coordination of consumption,investment and export.Nowadays consumption has become the key to the independent coordinate economic development and the long-term stable growth.The 260 million migrant workers' consumption ability poses a great importance on the expansion of overall consumption and on the boost of endogenous power of economic growth.To understand the situation of migrant worker's consumption,to improve their consumption expectations and ability,to tackle the consumption issues is not only is the realistic need to enlarge domestic demand and maintain the growth,but also the strategic choice to realize the urbanization of migrant workers.In addition,it is the striving force to solve the urban-rural dual structure and accelerate the pace of urbanization.Although consumption problems of migrant workers has aroused the concern of the government and academic circles,according to our grasp of the data and results,the attentions are mainly put on problematic research and qualitative study,obviously lacking quantitative research on migrant workers' consumption level,expectation,present expending situation and influencing factors.There exists short of in-deep study on the mechanism of the citizenization,as well as the dynamic effect of urbanization process by migrant worker's consuming behavior.Therefore,this paper has a questionnaire survey of 1,860 migrant workers from 28 provinces and cities in China.With the statistical analysis and econometric methods,it quantitatively reflects the factors restricting the consumption of migrant workers.Using the modern consumption theory,urbanization theory,modern sociological theory and econometrics methods,I combine normative and empirical method to analyze the mechanism of the promotion of migrant worker's urbanization by consumption,finding that there exists consumption differences between migrant workers and urban residents,summing up the main factors that influence the differences,and putting forward to specific political suggestions to expand consumption and promote the urbanization of migrant workers.This paper contains the main contents and basic points:1.As the motive power and booster of economic growth,consumer demand accelerates the process of urbanization and also promotes the population urbanization.However,citizenization of migrant workers is the main performance of urbanization.Based on the mechanism of conduction effect,consumer demand promotes the citizenization of migrant workers.2.As a communication system,consumption can play its function of social class distinction.Migrant workers can improve their consumption consciousness and patterns.By keeping close to the urban resident's consumption chain,they form symbolic language and code in line with the city resident's status.Thus,they can have a barrier-free communication and exchanges with and city residents,and then obtain civic identity in the field of consumption and realize the urbanization.3.The current consumption level of migrant workers is comparatively lower.The consumption expectation is not optimistic and the structure is given priority to "the subsistence".Compared with urban residents,migrant workers rely less on the market and the consumption pattern is on low level.Urban residents play an exemplary role in the consumption structure of "the developmental" and "the leisure",for example,"leisure consumption","digital consumption","investment consumption".Based on this,the article uses principal component analysis method to analyze the eight influencing factors of the consumption differences between migrant workers and urban residents.4.There are three main conditions that restrain migrant workers' consumption behavior:economic constraints,social constraints and personal constraints.The restrictive factor that mainly on migrant workers' income is the basic factor affecting their consuming capacity.The social constraint condition that mainly on social security system is the significant factor affecting migrant workers' consumption expectation.Also,the personal factor characterized by individual social demography is the main factor affecting migrant workers' consumption patterns and consumption habits.These there factors jointly restrict and influence the consuming capacity,consumption expectation,consumption environment and habit of migrant workers.5.Migrant worker's consuming behavior has important effects on the process of their urbanization.Based on the revision of the C-D function model,this paper has a measurement of the cross section data so as to measure the effect of process of migrant worker' s urbanization in 2011,finding that:On the basis of consumption of migrant workers' behavior,the urbanization rate was only 47.2%.This results shows that the effect of urbanization is not optimistic in our country,which is three percent lower than the urbanization rate released by State Statistical Bureau 49.95%.However,the result of measurement is not beyond other scholars' scope,basically according with China's present fact of urbanization.Also,it is consistent with theoretical analysis.Therefore,the result testifies that our index system and measure method are scientific and rational,showing the reliability of the result of measurement as well.6.By using VAR impulse response function and variance decomposition method,the article puts an empirical analysis on the dynamic effects that consumption has on the urbanization of migrant workers from the year 1978 to 2010.It turns out that:Consumption has a greater influence on the process of urbanization of migrant workers.The narrowing of the consumption gap between urban and rural areas has a promoting effect on the growth of urbanization rate,especially a greater long-term positive driving effect.The transformation of income gap between urban and rural areas has a dual-effect on urbanization rate of migrant workers:negative effect in short-term while positive effect as time goes on.7.This thesis put forward following political suggestions.In order to boost migrant worker's consumption ability,we come up with a four-in-one income system that can enhance and improve migrant worker's salary income,operating income,transfer income and property income;By speeding up the pace to build and perfect the public service system,including their education,housing,health care,pension,etc,we can improve their consumption expectations;Through positive guidance and education,we can improve migrant workers' consumption habits and structure;By means of perfecting natural environment,infrastructure,institutional environment,market environment and humanistic environment and something like consumption environment,it boosts the speed to incorporate the migrant workers into cities.Accelerating institutional innovation that focus on the household registration system reform can speed up the transition from migrant workers to urban residents in consumption fields.Based on the train of thought of mechanism analysis-modeling evaluation-policy choice,the article analyzed the internal mechanism of the promotion of urbanization by migrant worker's consuming behavior,explored the influencing factors of their consumption,established their consumption function from the cross section aspect and had an empirical test,measured the effect of the promotion of migrant workers by consumption,and then put forward a series of policies to expand their consumption demand and the depth of urbanization.There are still some deficiencies in the article,but I do hope it will provide some useful references to expand migrant worker's consumption and boost the urbanization not only in the research but also in the practical fields.
