Abstract/Summary:
The researcher conducted a study to determine geriatric awareness of grief and its affects. Seventy-five volunteers ages 65-95 from nursing homes, assisted living centers, and the Colorado Springs Senior Center participated in this study. The 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale measured awareness of mood and the Hogan Grief Reaction Checklist measured overall grief symptoms. The results indicated a significant correlation between overall grief and alexithymia (r = .561 < p .05); overall grief and Despair (r = .945 < p .05), Panic (r = .301 < p .05), Blame/Anger (r = .821 < p .05), Detachment (r = .930 < .05), Disorganized (r = .797 < .05) and overall grief and Personal Growth (r = .353 < p .05).
