Abstract/Summary:
The Internet has become pervasive in modern society; however, the extent to which nonprofits use the Internet to account to stakeholders is understudied. This dissertation measures the extent to which nonprofit organizations are using information communication technologies to account to, and communicate with, stakeholders, a process defined here as virtual accountability (VA). It also identifies the organizational characteristics associated with nonprofits that have successfully adopted the Internet at a tool to enhance its accountability. By measuring the virtual accountability of nonprofit organizations through an analysis of their Web sites, a better understanding evolves not only of the extent to which the organization uses its Web site, but also the usability, content, and communication levels of the site. Through the analysis of archival data, content analysis, surveys, and interviews, a model of virtual accountability is developed.
