Abstract/Summary:
The notion of workplace spirituality has emerged as a prominent paradigm in intellectual discussions and at American workplaces. The corporate and intellectual inclination towards ideas of spirituality has initiated an exploration of its suitability for balancing the value and efficiency-based needs of public administration. The present study identifies the reasons that have contributed to the emergence of organizational spirituality. It also discusses the factors that have restricted its advancement and have raised skepticism concerning its widespread receptiveness. The study identifies conceptual ambiguity in the existing literature as the most significant constraining factor for the positive receptiveness of organizational spirituality and deliberates on its various neutral, secular, and sacred conceptual dimensions. The discussion extends to review the recent intellectual attempts at reconciling the secular and sacred characterizations that have proposed an expansive and embracing humanistic notion of organizational spirituality. To induce further clarity on the subject, the present study consolidates the existing literature to identify the most accepted and common characteristics of the spiritual workforce and spiritual organizations. The study concludes by exploring the value of organizational or workplace spirituality for addressing the contemporary necessities of public administration, including increased workforce motivation, dynamic adaptability, and competitive advantage, while rehydrating its core value of public service. The aim of the study is to examine workplace spirituality as an emerging school of thought and provide coherence to the existing literature on workplace spirituality, which has so far remained conceptually incoherent and scattered.
