Abstract/Summary:
In the past 100 years, hyperactive behavior seen in children has been described and subjected to multiple etiological theories. These theories tend to have their roots in the social and cultural climate in which they arise. An examination of the evolution of the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder diagnosis shows that, while the explanation of what causes the behavior may change, the description remains steady. Deficient behavioral inhibition appears to play a major role in the manifestation of symptoms of ADHD. Recent fMRI evidence as well as advances in cognitive interventions suggests this is a deficit that may be amenable to mindfulness interventions.
