Abstract/Summary:
The current study compared the academic achievement and English proficiency of English Language Learners in an urban community enrolled in a variety of bilingual education programs. The programs included were: English as a Second Language, Transitional Bilingual, and Dual Language: Two-Way Immersion Program. Academic achievement in reading, writing and math were measured by New York State ELA standardized exam, and New York State math standardized exam scores. English Language Proficiency was measured by the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement test (NYSESLAT) scores. By analyzing the statewide exam results, this study revealed that English Language Learners in Dual Language programs overall achieved higher academic performance and English language proficiency. The results from the present study support findings from previous research conducted on Dual Language programs, which demonstrate the advantages of Dual Language programs over other alternative bilingual programs.
