Abstract/Summary:
This study came about due to a perceived need for a remedial program to which to refer mostly older, nontraditional students who need to expand their comprehension about their behavior, character traits, and personality. Many of these students describe their greatest impediment in school as not knowing how to study effectively. In this study the researcher's objective was to investigate if students, by studying their learning preferences, would be better able to understand how they and others learn and function within the educational environment. The study was conducted within the parameters of a psychology course. The students' psychological types were determined using the Myers-Briggs Type Inventory. Personal and educational data was collected via questionnaire and interview. They were instructed about type preferences, dynamics, and instructor/learner interactions in the teaching/learning relationship, and their learning success was assessed. The learners' understanding and success was assessed on their understanding of psychological type and their ability to employ type concepts to achieve educational objectives and overcome educational impediments. The foundation of this study supposed that a study of psychological type could teach learners who have an inadequacy of understanding or mistaken notions about how they learn to see if such a learning experience provides them a view into their personalities to assist in dismantling old learning impediments and allow them to advance to goals that would otherwise be inaccessible. The data suggests part of the data gleaned does and some does not point toward the resolution of the research question.
