Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the processes and outcomes of integrating arts into a standards-based mandated curriculum. In conducting this study, my intent was to discover and describe the effects that the arts integration had within the classroom setting. Specifically, I was interested in learning about the effect of arts-based instruction on student knowledge and thinking, and in examining the implementation processes of integrating the arts. The deeper phenomenological understanding this study provides should prove valuable for other educators interested in integrated arts into their curriculum.;The study used qualitative methodology within a case study design to examine the process and outcomes of integrating the arts into mandated curriculum. The use of qualitative methodology, and case study design, provided visual images and thick descriptions in order for other educators to then consider the value of implementing the arts into their curriculum. The data were first analyzed by a research collaborative consisting of myself and fellow doctoral candidates. The data were then analyzed a second time by a teacher focus group using documentation panels.;The qualitative methodologies employed in this study present a lived experience of my struggles to integrate the arts into mandated, standards based curriculum. This study revealed obstacles, not unique to my setting, which hinder educators from implementing the arts and other ways of teaching into the curriculums given the accountability framework of today. In spite of the obstacles, this study also made visible the ways in which the arts enhanced the curriculum and engaged the students in joyful learning experiences. Although there were many hindrances, there was substantial evidence that even those small successes of integrating the arts proved meaningful and memorable for my students.;As I returned to school the following year to the same group of students who asked, "Ms. Slater are we going to do that art stuff again like we did last year?" I was resolved to continue my struggle of integrating the arts within the mandated curriculum. Finally, I would like to quote Gandhi who said, "We must be the change we wish to see in the world."...
