Abstract/Summary:
The Nigerian banking sector is one of the strongest sectors in Nigeria, with high profit margins and global ratings, but some studies reveal human productivity decline. Protracted bank transactions; crowded banking halls; and difficult and stressful work conditions are among the identified weaknesses. This study examined how Nigerian bank employees perceived the relationship between communication satisfaction and productivity and whether there is a significant difference among ethnic groups in their perception of these two variables. Reviewed literature lent credence to challenges in defining productivity, the importance of organization communication process, as input to yield output, productivity, and the need to conduct more research how communication relates to productivity. A fixed methodology utilizing a questionnaire (Communication Satisfaction Question by Clampitt (1993)), as the data collection instrument, was used to survey the perception of managers and their subordinates in a large Nigeria city, as the sample of the population from the Nigerian banking sector. While Pearson's correlations coefficient was used to determine the employee perceived relationship between communication satisfaction dimensions and productivity, One-Way ANOVA, and Regression analysis were used to measure the perceived differences in effects of communication dimensions on productivity among ethnic groups. Results showed no relationship between most of the communication satisfaction dimensions and productivity, as well as no employee perceived differences in effect of most communication satisfaction dimensions on productivity. If Nigerian banks are holding the core of the economy and if surveyed bank employees do not perceive communication to influence productivity, then what drives their performance? Based on the results of this study and these questions, there are ethical implications and it is important for this and other sectors to explore what drives their employees' productivity.
