Abstract/Summary:
Maintenance is an essential function in the manufacturing company especially in today's competitive environment. Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is a company-wide strategy to increase the effectiveness of the production environment so that machines and processes are available whenever needed and able to produce the right products with the required quality level. However, cases of a number of companies failing to successfully implement such strategies are well documented.;The objective of this research is to develop a TPM Implementation Methodology (TPMIM) in Small Manufacturing Enterprises (SMEs) using the Transform Enterprise Methodology (TEM) approach. The methodology integrates cultural, process, and technology strategies and is composed of an organized collection of activities that describes "what" must be done to implement TPM. The TPMIM is an engineering approach to help implement TPM successfully. The TPMIM will enable companies to make a smooth transformation of the maintenance function from its current state to a desired future condition.;The development of the TPMIM consists of three phases: literature review, case study data collection and analysis, and methodology development. Phase one, literature review, provides a foundation for developing the methodology and the support for theories derived from experience and insight in emerging theories identified in other companies attempting implementation. Phase two, case study data collection and analysis, supplies the data and lessons that will assist to place priority on implementation activities and to guide the methodology development. Phase three, methodology development, synthesizes the current literature and case study results and incorporates the findings into the methodology. Finally, a structured representation scheme of IDEFO model is developed.;In addition, a TPM implementation guidebook has been constructed to guide the application of this method. This guidebook provides a step-by-step prescriptive approach that describes "how" to implement TPM based on the methodology.
