Abstract/Summary:
The fastest-growing segment within our population, senior citizens, remains the group that is the least likely to participate in the technological applications to health care that can produce empowered health consumers. Achieving the goals of Healthy People 2010 (i.e., increasing health-related quality of life, and eliminating disparities in health) requires bridging the digital divide for seniors.; This study was a formative evaluation that examined the computer skills and computer learning preferences of volunteer senior participants in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In addition, the network of senior citizen centers that the participants attend was evaluated to determine the factors that the sites contain that both hinder and encourage seniors in increasing their computer skills and in expediting their access to Internet-connected computers. The objective of this research was to determine elements to consider in the planning of programs that would increase the number of computer-literate seniors, and that would increase the number of seniors who search the Internet for health information.; The results from this research point out the need to establish programs in which seniors can experience early success in learning how to accomplish valued activities using computers. Adequate hardware, software and instructional methods are needed. In addition, having fellow seniors as instructors and classmates are a part of the programs that would produce a relaxed, “can-do” atmosphere in the classroom. Following the acquisition of the skills needed to take part in telehealth activities, the seniors need access to low-cost, convenient, Internet-based computers on which to acquire health information.; The recommendations flowing from this research provide program planners and future researchers with five interrelated topics to pursue: (1) Developing partnerships to plan and implement programs; (2) Standardization of curriculum and instruction; (3) Recruiting and training of volunteer teachers; (4) Carefully planned program design and development; and (5) The acquisition of current, appropriate hardware and software.
