Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this dissertation is to develop a mindfulness meditation based substance abuse recovery program. The program aims to help individuals with substance use disorders effectively cope with drug cravings through the use of mindfulness meditation. Research has shown that mindfulness meditation is effective in reducing stress, anxiety, depression, and substance use in recovering addicts through acceptance. Therapeutic approaches based in mindfulness such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) will be discussed to illustrate the effectiveness of mindfulness in treatment and how it is utilized in mindfulness meditation. Essential aspects such as duration of treatment, clinicians and their training, client population, and budget will also be addressed.
