Abstract/Summary:
The use of personality assessment instruments in different contexts and with different populations has long been accepted and utilized in the mental health profession. The appropriateness of use for different instruments have emerged through reliability and validity studies. The current study examined the validity of the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) for use with the community supervised sex offender population. Factor analyses were conducted on all scales comprising the PAI. Results indicated a multiple Factor structure on all of the scales, with a first Factor explaining the majority of the variability of each scale, and included the highest number of items on each scale. Items demonstrated as not contributing to a Factor structure were removed, and a Factor analysis was run again. When this occurred, a one-Factor structure was found, indicating the appropriateness of the removal of the item. Implications of the results were discussed.
