Building resilience in the university environment

Abstract/Summary:
This study examines university students' approach to adversities and their emotional support mechanisms. Building resilience in university students is important because resilience improves the success of college students, which benefits the institution and the country. Maintaining student emotional well-being is the obligation of higher education. The educational achievement and emotional improvement has been an important human development issues discussed in the United States, Europe, and Puerto Rico for years. This study found that students from the institution in the study are impacted by demographic, economic, political, social, and technological changes; therefore, educational institutions play a major role in students' development. The literature suggests school administrators should provide leadership in promoting student resilience. The literature review identifies the importance of work to improve emotional resilience in university students with the intent of avoiding personal and educational failure. This literature was identified through organized searches of relevant databases to get data for this study. This study recommends that college administrators promote resilience and create a school climate as part of the students' personal and professional development as a responsibility of the institution. This study found that fostering resilience will impact students' lives in positive ways, creating a better future for our society. The administration of the institution in this study in Puerto Rico has developed varied and flexible strategies in order to meet its students' needs appropriately through this study of resilience.
