Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation develops a relational conceptualization of cross-cultural understanding using a grounded theory approach. Through a multi-phase, multi-method research process using Japanese-U.S. joint ventures, a construct of cross-cultural understanding emerges which encompasses interrelated contextual, relational, and affective aspects. The study traces the development of cross-cultural understanding starting from a social constructivist view, with individual cognitions as the primary focus, and ending in a social constructionist view, with social relations and the organizational context as the primary foci. Through theoretical sampling, constant comparisons, and coding of data, the emergent relational conceptualization is achieved, and reflects a significant departure from the extant literature on cross-cultural understanding, where theory and research are focused primarily on the individual. For cross-cultural training and preparation, this conceptualization suggests that more emphasis be placed on opportunities for relationship development and joint action as ways of enhancing understanding across culture groups.
