Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation examines the British Liberal Party during a period of dissention and decline. After introducing the history of factionalism in the party before the period in question, this paper explores the estrangement and subsequent reunion of the followers of Herbert Henry Asquith and David Lloyd George after 1916. Attention focuses on potential party alignments during the Lloyd George Coalition Government during the war, and especially after the General Election of 1918. This is followed by an examination of the reunion of the warring factions after the collapse of the Coalition in 1922. The remainder of the paper is an examination of party organization, as Liberals try to remain a viable political force despite financial ruin and lingering factionalism.
