Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation examines the phenomenon of irredentism: attempts by states to annex territories of another state which their co-nationals inhabit. I argue that domestic nationalism, if it advocates the need to make the borders of the nation and the political state correspond, will drive the state toward irredentism. The key independent variable highlighted in my dissertation, however, is the way in which the international community---defined broadly to include major powers and international organizations---determines the success or failure of an irredentist project. I examine four case studies: Serbia and Croatia, which both pursued irredentist projects; and Russia and post-Cold War Hungary which, to date, have not.
