Abstract/Summary:
A comprehensive literature review and analysis addressing the psychology of cults, violence in religion through history, across the globe, and the personalities at risk for cult recruitment was examined through a case study. History and etiology of Satanic cults, stages in recovery detailing the techniques for treatment, specifically Rational Emotive Therapy (RET) as described by Albert Ellis (1974). Rational Emotive Therapy (RET) is the focus of treatment and a breakdown of the participant's original and irrational belief system is dissected throughout therapy. Utilizing the RET framework, inappropriate and appropriate negative emotions and their cognitive correlates are referenced. The idea that we are able to have flexibility in our cognitive schema, particularly through internalization of insight, is a focus in this subject's therapy. The introduction of this case study, explanation and critique of the assessment tools used in a psychological battery, will be discussed. Over a twelve month period, the participant detailed a life history, how he came to be involved in cult practice and his eventual desire for a release of this lifestyle. The assistance of supporting documents, such as previous psychiatric, psychological, legal records, assessments and family consultation is incorporated. Approval for the utilization of this information was provided by the treating hospital, patient and participating individuals' releases and consents. Results detail treatment in the Rational Emotive framework indicating a positive effect on the subject. However, psychotherapeutic and pharmacological maintenance is deemed necessary. The comprehensive case analysis with suggestions for interception and reduction of violence is reported.
