Abstract/Summary:
The purpose and objective of this social action project is to develop and construct a two family affordable housing apartment duplex. It is driven by the desire to improve the living conditions of citizens within the lower socio-economic status in Dillon, South Carolina. For many, surviving from day to day against enormous economic obstacles creates havoc within their lives. Many have to constantly choose between the basic life essentials and safe, decent and affordable housing. The goal of this project is to provide affordable housing to qualified individuals, regardless of race, creed, color or national origin in Dillon County South Carolina.; There is a body of knowledge that suggests there is a direct correlation between unsafe and poor housing and the health of the inhabitants. Children remain most at risk in to poor housing conditions because of infestations of rodents and roaches, which carry disease. During this project I analyzed the economic infra structure of Dillon, South Carolina to determine the root cause(s) which contribute towards the need for continuing the pursuit of constructing affordable housing in that city.; My personal observations of housing conditions in Dillon, South Carolina confirmed the need for an increase in affordable housing for people of lower socio-economic status. I discovered there was a significant difference in living conditions within the county. Those differences varied from very good housing conditions to semi-deplorable. The task of evaluating and analyzing the need for better housing in Dillon County, South Carolina involved several factors; however, the most significant discovery was economics. During my project, I asked and answered the question “Is there a need for affordable housing in Dillon County?” If there was a need, why does it exist? Secondly, as a result of the need assessment, an affordable housing project was developed and implemented along with designing a model for creating affordable housing projects similar to this one.
