Abstract/Summary:
Innovation has been studied extensively due to its importance to organizational competitiveness and effectiveness. Unlike previous empirical studies, this research "dynamically" studied the organizational innovation adoption process and included organizational, individual and contextual characteristics, the interactions of the characteristics, and the effect of the innovation adoption process on the characteristics.;This study analyzes the behavior of organizational innovation theory over time, beyond static, point-in-time statistical analysis and demonstrates the use of system dynamics, an alternative research methodology that provides better measurement of variables and interactions over a continuum of time. In addition, the use of the system dynamics methodology addressed some of the criticisms that researchers have put forth and addressed some of the methodological problems encountered with conventional empirical studies.;A simulation model of the innovation adoption process was developed using the system dynamics methodology and the results of these simulation studies have made some significant contributions to the study of the innovation adoption process. These contributions are the identification of primary and supporting influences on the characteristics over a continuum of time; the identification of the influence of the innovation adoption process itself on the characteristics; and the opportunity to study Duncan's ambidextrous theory of innovation from a different, dynamic perspective provide significant contributions.
