| "Mektoub" or written on the Sand: une poetique nomade de l'inscription et de l'effacement" is the title of the dissertation. Though a literal translation does not do justice to the play on words as well as the intricate linguistic, cultural, social, and religious subtleties which the tri-lingual title (Arabic, English, and French) calls for, a possible second title, and general direction of the research would be: "Francophone perspectives, and beyond: Space, as a cultural and political dilemma; a nomadic poetic of inscription and erasure."; The dissertation starts by looking at the colonial model within the greater system of domination. It examines the consequences of colonialism in the specific case of Algeria, and on the Algerian people, through Mohammed Dib's La Grande maison, Le Metier a tisser, and L'Incendie. In so doing, it emphasizes strategies of resistance and the revolutionary tradition. The dissertation also examines the consequences of colonialism, at the level of the colonized individual who is influenced by the colonial school, as portrayed in Albert Memmi's La Statue de sel. The focus is on the incompatibility of the subject formation with the existing model, and a criticism of both the Maghreb, and the colonial enterprise, whereby the multiple must suffocate. The dissertation examines as well, a similar situation of domination, beyond the Francophone world, and looks at the consequences of British colonialism, in the context of Nigeria, particularly on the Ibo society, as depicted by Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart. The focus is on the missionary work of the British colonial system, and the dramatic consequences which follow conversion to Christianity.; The dissertation demonstrates that the various usurpation of spaces, are not limited to the colonial situation, but they continue to inform today's "post" colonial and "post modern" conditions, particularly in the cultural and political arenas. It suggests that authors of the Francophone Diaspora offer with others, a unique insight into borderness, as the site of creative resistance to the geographical and political boundaries of States and Nations. Thus, in a gesture which opens the field of research, we focus on "future perspectives."... |
