In 1833-1834 Flora Tristan, a French-Peruvian woman, traveled from Paris to Peru to obtain her father's inheritance. During her trip she wrote a journal which served as the basis for her book Peregrinations d'une paria (Peregrinations of a pariah), published in 1838.; This dissertation places the book within the genre of autobiography typical of Romanticism and analyzes it as a Bildungsroman. The study focuses on Tristan's tendency to write about her own situation and that of other women, and the strategies she utilizes to overcome or evade her problems. Rather than a victim, as she often describes herself, Tristan is seen to be a resourceful woman.; The Introduction presents Peregrinations in the context of Tristan's work and justifies the analysis of a book written in French as a dissertation on Latin American literature.; The second chapter is a short biography of Tristan.; The third chapter considers literary structure and genre. It discusses Tristan's varying approaches to her text.; The fourth chapter deals with the manner in which Tristan wrote Peregrinations and the book's constant metaliterary references and intertextual features. It also considers Tristan's reasons for writing this autobiographical text.; The fifth chapter analyzes Peregrinations as a Bildungsroman typical of Romanticism. It studies the differences between narrator and protagonist, the protagonist's evolution and self-analysis, her portrait of other characters, and the different types of discourse within the text.; The sixth chapter focuses on Tristan's reflections on her own situation and the situation of other women. Emphasis is given to Tristan's playing different roles in order to reach her goals, and to the stories of other women inserted in the book.; The seventh chapter comments on Tristan's reaction to slavery and to the oppression of workers.; The eighth chapter presents some of her views about Peru.; The conclusion states that Peregrinations is a good example of Romanticism and an attractive book for the study of the situation of women and Peruvian culture in the nineteenth century.
