Abstract/Summary:
This study explored the role of self-compassion in the lives of women in early recovery from drug addiction. While research defines the barriers women face when battling addiction, including stigma, unresolved emotions, conflicted relationships, and fear of losing children, there is less research on the role that self-compassion plays in helping women in early recovery regain self-worth and esteem. The present study utilized a qualitative research design in which twelve women between the ages of 21 and 37 were interviewed. These twelve women were currently in the early stages of recovery, which ranged anywhere from three to 18 months abstinence from a mind-altering substance. Participant's engaged in an Appreciative Inquiry interview consisting of a "lead-in" paragraph and open-ended questions pertaining to their experiences in active addiction and the role of self-compassion.;The results of this study revealed four larger categorical themes and various subcategories. The four thematic categories were: Pathways to Addiction, Constraints and Consequences, Positive Support, and Self-Compassion According to Women in Early Recovery. It was found that these women valued self-kindness, self-awareness, a sense of belonging, and altruism as components of self-compassion in early recovery. In addition, the participants of this study also acknowledged their inner strengths and ability to recognize that their recovery was an "ongoing process." The intention of the current research was not to prove that self-compassion would promote greater success in terms of recovery. Instead, this study aimed to further understand the complex nuances of drug addiction among women and one's ability or inability to utilize components of self-compassion while in early recovery. The current research suggests that self-compassion might promote an enhanced sense of well-being for women in early recovery.
